Romcom, the new coming of age?

The 80s seemed to be the era of "Coming of Age" movies. Good examples are "Stand By Me", "16 Candles", "Ordinary People", I could go on. I might do an IMDB list, but thats not my point.

My point is that when the "coming of age" movie was a common thing, it was assumed that this was in an era of simple times. What the Coming of Age movie did was show that time when kids are hit with something that shakes their existence. Its a given that eventually this would happen, as in the old days people went to college or got jobs, graduated, got married, had kids, because that was a common thing in America.

However, now the reality now is much different. People graduate college, and dread marriage, and want to put it off as soon as possible. One scene in this movie illustrated this very well, when the woman executive winked at the main girl in the movie and said "You haven't been wife #1 yet."

There is a book that was written that points to the trend of men just being boys and not growing up, or delaying maturity. So, in lieu of this, could this movie show us that romcom is the new "coming of age". Would anybody agree? Men are slow to grow up and so they want to stay boys and then it takes some of what these guys experienced to finally grow up?
