With sophisticated events for adults people will say "dressy," "fancy," "formal," "elegant," etc. Ellie may have said something like that if she hadn't been drinking that night. Jason may have asked for clarification if he had not been drinking. Who knows.

Ok, I could see maybe somehow under the influence he could have misconstrued what she was saying, but at the same time he probably should have had even a tiny bit of doubt or uncertainty, and given the nature of his costume, he probably should have gotten a little clarification. I know my friends would definitely put a "wacky" or "crazy" in front of dress up party if they for some very odd reason didn't choose to call it a costume party.
