Well I'm hoping this one wasn't rushed, since it's been 14 years. I know fans were clamoring for another Bad Santa, and Billy Bob said on a Monday Night Football broadcast years ago that he would do one. Hopefully he's the kind of dude (he strikes me as one) who wouldn't do a sequel if he didn't like the script.
I'm concerned, though, too...especially since the original writers and director aren't back for this one. I'm wondering why not? Those guys also wrote I Love You Philip Morris, another funny dark comedy. They know how to do dark humor.
Dumb and Dumber simply waited too long for a sequel, quite frankly. Those characters were funny and more believable as two young nitwits...20 years later, you felt sorry for them and their stupidity, also they just seemed worn-down. And while the first Dumb and Dumber was unquestionably funny, I don't put it in the same league as Bad Santa, which had more substance and was just more original. I'm not sure there's any other actor who could've pulled off Willie T. Stokes, or would have dared to try, that took some serious balls from Billy Bob and he delivered.
The sequel will have the challenge of replacing other very funny characters, notably Thurman Merman (yeah, I know he's in it, but kid Thurman was freaking hilarious, we shall see about grown-up Therman); Bernie Mac, John Ritter and Cloris Leachman (who I'm guessing is not in this one). No offense to L.G., but she shouldn't be missed too much, she was more just there for the story, though she made for good eye candy and played that part nicely, didn't oversell it or anything.
