Thurman says his mother and grandma were dead but his father is never mentioned. He was in prison for embezzlement and I believe he was only serving something like 2-3 years. He would have been out for 10 years at the time of the sequel. It's possible Thurman was taken away from him and custody given to grandma but it's never explained.

I noticed that too!! I came to the same conclusion but that's the only thing about the sequel I didn't care for. They explained the Gilmore Girls woman, grandma, and the rest of the cast was there (minus the Bernie Mac because he's deceased but he doesn't really count), but that was the only part they skipped over.
