I actually SAW the movie and found the pairing appropriate. First, reality doesn't always match fiction: Estelle Getty from "Golden Girls" played the mother and oldest but in reality she was the youngest actress in the cast and 1 yrs younger than Bea Arthur (by your logic, they would've had to recast, can't give birth before you're born); on "I Love Lucy", Vivian Vance (Ethel) was actually *younger* than Lucille Ball but they made her look frumpy because she was older on the show. The cast of "Dawson's Creek", at least James Van Der Veek was drinking age when the show started. The list goes on.
Secondly, we don't know the exact ages of Willie & his mother but it's said in the movie she had him at THIRTEEN *and* she did hard time in prison plus he's a drunk. People who do over a decade in prison don't look young. People who are life-long drunks don't look young. Add in all the illness, fighting, and gunshot wounds you get Willie & his mother which is perfectly believable to me. They looked old but close in age just as they should. I'd love to live in your rosy perfect world *rolls eyes*
