I thought the first one was better overall, with MUCH better acting. BBT was better in the first. But Kathy Bates STEALS this movie! I didn't really see much of the previews and didn't know she would have such a big role, but every scene that she is in, she killed it.
I like BBT, but Kathy Bates' character was the only one that had me laughing the whole movie, whereas BBT seems a little flat (compared to the first one).
Agreed, she was great in this and was an excellent addition to the cast.

Yeah, totally agreed! I hope she returns in Bad Santa 3 (IF it ever happens..as I BELIEVE it WOULD..would also love, if LAUREN GRAHAM* could have the time, to return as Sue (unnamed in the dialogue and elsewhere in the first ala ELIZABET BANKS* as Effie in "Hunger Games"(1) in 2012. She's great too. But BATES has the show stolen here).
