I think it topped the first one

It had all the raunchiness and great humor of the first but without the things that made it drag, like Ritter and Bernie Mac talking about the Santa's behavior, or Bernie Mac catching a shop-lifter in his store, which went nowhere.

Sure, the scenes involving Christina Hendricks' husband and the security guard were a little flat, but everything else just clicked along. Thornton was right to wait this long for a script worthy of the first BS, and he found it.

Dude what? John Ritter and Bernie Mac were some of the best parts of Bad Santa, besides Billy Bob Thornton and Tony Cox.

reply

I mean, the scene of Ritter and Mac discussing Thornton's buttf-cking of women was kind of funny, but it killed the pace. Mac negotiating them down on the 'half' scene was good, but basically he seemed like he was in a different movie.

reply

I couldn't disagree with you more. Mac and Ritter had great chemistry and makes me sad that I never got to see them do anymore movies together. Their scenes didn't drag, and as far as adding to the movie? I would argue that it set up Mac to infiltrate Santa and his helper's little ring, so that he could extort them later.

Ritter and Mac were some of the best parts of the first movie and talent like theirs was sorely missed this time around.

reply

Look, I agree with you, but Mac and Ritter, rememebr died over ten years, Ritter almost fifteen years ago in 2003 (the year the first movie was released). With all due respect I think this topped or equalled it. Any movie with Kathy Bates playing who she did, had Christina Hendricks (in a very good non-Mad Men role), and a TWENTY ONE YEAR OLD GROWN UP Brett "Thurman" Kelly and two Santas, one of them our own bad one, in the urbsan Chicago snow, to legendary crooner Andy Williams and that "Most wonderful time": classic on the soundtrack has all my votes. But nothing can replace Bernie Mac and John Ritter (RIP to both and Andy Williams. Little piece of trivia. That song I mentioned he sang was written by "Gilligan's Island" (post-"Wonferful") "Just..Sit right back" songwriter George Wylie! The two hit (not true, of course, he wrote others) but two iconic hit songwriting wonder!

It was OK but not great.

It’s a great sequel but I can’t agree that it topped the first.

You make a good point about Mac and Ritter, people squirting over their scenes is pure corpse inflation. Don’t get me wrong, they’re fine comedians and their scenes were decent, but they felt drawn out cos ‘hey we’ve got Ritter and Mac, let’s up their screen time regardless of relevance to the plot.’

reply

This one was oddly moving, too. The fat kid singing in the choir is quite an emotional scene considering the total lack of sentiment in the first movie.

reply

I liked this one, but hell no it wasn't anywhere close to the first

reply

I don’t know if I’d go that far, but it’s a great sequel, absolutely worthy of the first film, and actually had better pacing.

To the naysayers… how would you have made it differently?

reply

I'll have to watch it again soon but it might not be this year. I think it followed of the same plot points beat for beat and the jokes didn't really land. Its vulgar just to be vulgar with none of the shock value.

reply

Plot-wise it’s pretty much what you’d want from a sequel. Aliens and T2 are retreads of their predecessors but with enough different to stay entertaining, that’s how this felt.

It can’t ‘shock’ the way the first film did because we know what to expect, but the jokes all hit for me. Even Billy Bob just staring at Christina Hendricks’ tits while she’s trying to talk to him cracks me up 🤣 It’s all there in the performances, and this movie has 3 Oscar winners nailing every moment.

People are going to come around to this film.

Notice how its detractors have no ideas on how to improve it.

reply

Didn't come close to the first one. The only part I liked more in the second was Christina Hendricks for the fap quality. In the first movie the raunchiness was for laugh value. In part two they made it more gratuitous I guess.
