And for those reasons...I'm out.

So not liking Usher is considered dbaggery?

reply

Don't rush to judgment. After all Will Smith, another rapper, played Ali and did quite well. The movie sucked, but that was Michael Mann's fault. I thought Will held up his end quite well.

reply

Usher is an R&B singer, not rapper.

I stand corrected. I'm old guy, and I don't keep up too much with the current music scene. Lol

But the point is still the same: singers/rappers can also do well as actors.

How true, Sparky48: Frank Sinatra, Cher, Burl Ives, and Jennifer Hudson, to name a few, not only did well, but won Oscars as well.

Will Smith had done a considerable amount of acting before taking on the role of Ali. By that point in his career he was an actor first, and a rapper second, if at all.

Usher's acting background is limited to cameos, small bit parts, and acting with Muppets. He's primarily a singer, and producer of music. I also think that while Usher is personable, and in real life trains in a boxing gym for fitness, by looking at the trailers he seems to be playing the character like a combination of Apollo Creed, Muhammad Ali, and Leonard. He's also several years older than Ray was when depicted in this film, and doesn't have Ray's good looks. Of course one could argue that Edgar Ramirez is better looking than Duran was (and speaks much better English, but this is an American movie, so...).

But as the other poster pointed out, Sinatra and Hudson had virtually no acting experience at all when they appeared in their respective movies--("From Here To Eternity" (Sinatra) and "Dreamgirls"(Hudson), and both won Oscars.

As for looks, the truth is that Will Smith bears minimal if no resemblance to Ali, but that didn't pose a problem at all.

In regard to Ray being "good looking,"well, that's a matter of opinion. Personally, I agree with Roberto Duran: Ray's head was too big. LOL

[Usher's] also several years older than Ray was when depicted in this film...

That didn't stop Kevin Spacey (who was 43 at the time) from playing Bobby Darin (who died at age 37) in "Beyond the Sea". He got a lot of praise as well.

Actually he does rap too. In the song Let Me See, he rapped in it, smart ass. Feel stupid now?

Don't get hurt kid. I'm not your daddy, I'll beat you senseless.

He looks like it and Usher only has a small role, it's not like it's going to be a huge impact bro, chill. I'm more likely to hate this movie because of Ellen Barkin since she has a big role. The lady is a gold digging nasty attitude bitch who has a cancerous face. I still don't know why they still cast the bitch knowing she's very hated and far from talented. That's my beef with this movie. On the other hand, Ana is pure eye candy.
