Do we really need another boxing film?

I'll watch Pacino in anything, but damn... another one?

reply

do we really need another crime, mob, romance, action, films?

"God bless the homicidal maniacs. They make life worthwhile."

reply

Romance and action are genres.

reply

If Pacino's in it, then yes, yes we do (need another boxing film).

DO NOT ENTRY

reply

If Mickey Ward is deserving of a movie about him, then Duran deserves 100.

If the actor can properly portray Roberto, then were going to see true grit (save for the "No Mas" fight) and compassion as it has rarely been captured on screen.

They better include his entire history with Esteban DeJesus.

reply

In between fights Duran looked like a short furniture mover at about 185 lbs.

When in NYC in the 1980's he would stay at a hotel at the beginning of Central park West. A lot of actors stayed there. There was a small good humor ice cream cart there. He would send his people there bought a ton of ice creams.

He had a lot of people with him and he loved baseball. He formed a team of his guys complete with Uniforms. He played against a team of the hotel people in Central park.

I wonder if any of that would be in the movie?

I know this because I used to hang out at that hotel

reply

I remember reading about this. I think Lou Duva and Tony Ayala were walking around NYC, and the latter spotted Duran hanging out with his shirt unbuttonned and holding a half drunken bottle of rum. Would've loved to have seen those guys square off.

reply

this.

you could say the same about James Braddock too (Cinderella Man).

how many boxers have biopics? 4 at a guess?
[Ali, Braddock, Ward, LaMotta - anyone else?]

re DeJesus - are you thinking they won't because the Fighter didn't even mention Gatti?

"you don't get any medals for trying - you're supposed to do that"

reply

I'm mostly worried the film won't include anything about DeJesus simply because he isn't as big a name as Leonard, Hearns, or Hagler. When people think Duran, those are the names that come to mind first.

I don't know the half of it, but what I do know about his relationship with Esteban is very powerful. Going from literally trying to kill him in the ring to crying bitterly at his funeral after he died of AIDS.

Other fighters with biopics off the top of my head are Rocky Graziano (Somebody Up There Likes Me), Jack Johnson (can't remember the name of it), Mike Tyson (kind of cheating here as it was an HBO movie), and Jack Dempsey (Don't remember the name, but Treat Williams played him).

reply

Apparently you don't think so. Solution? Don't watch. Jesus Christ, I don't go complain every time Ryan Gossling makes a movie. I just don't pay to see it.

Easy, see?

reply

A film about Roberto Durán isn't just another "boxing film," it's the story of one of the 10 greatest fighters of all time (of any weight class, ranked 6th. on the avarage), of which boxing is merely a backdrop.

IF YOU'RE NOT LIVING ON THE EDGE, YOU'RE OCCUPYING TOO MUCH SPACE.

reply

Just heard about this....so psyched!!!!!! Roberto Duran one of my fav. boxers of all time, Gael Garcia Bernal one of my Fav actors and Al Pacino involved, this is *beep* epic!!!!

reply

Sh*t you're old! Well I can actually say that I watched Duran fight on PPV growing up so SH*T, I'm pretty old too. Tyson is still my favorite fighter thought along with Vinny Paz since his gym was across the street from my school.

Don't get hurt kid. I'm not your daddy, I'll beat you senseless.

reply

I'm just seeing this for Usher and Ana de Armas....

reply

Do we need anymore teen novel movies or superhero movies? They still make them. You act like there's a million boxing movies out there.
