Anyone else feel horrible for Qbert?

Gotta tell ya, when we see Qbert for the first time at the entrance to "Fix'it Felix" with the please help sign I kind of felt a profound sense of sadness for him. Standing there with his game mates. I mean they all looked so defeated. I'm guessing others who grew up with those 80s arcade games might feel like that too. Loved this movie.

I did too. The movie's concept of video game characters dying or becoming homeless when their cabinet gets unplugged is very sad and disturbing and for a kid's movie.

It equates turning off a game to killing beings who have hopes and dreams. This movie probably made some kids think twice about turning off their Playstations. :)

It crushes their hopes and dreams but they continue to live ala Qbert.

Only because Q*bert got out before his machine was unplugged. Had he still been inside, he would have died.

What happens if they plug it back in? Do they come back to life?

reply

I think so, but don't they lose memories?

Yeah, that was very sad! I thought it was very clever that later in the movie Ralph gives them all their jobs back, and builds them homes, and gives them a happy ending. If the writers hadn't done that I think a lot of people would have been bothered that poor Qbert and his pals were still sad and homeless.

I also thought the scene where Felix is speaking "Qbertese" with Qbert was pretty funny.

PS If you look closely during the scene where Calhoun is explaining cybugs to Felix ("Once those cybugs finish off Sugar Rush..."), when the camera pans across Game Central Station you can see a baker giving a pie to Qbert and his friends, and their surprised and grateful reaction. I thought that was a nice touch.

Seeing Q-Bert and his friends like that broke my heart. Always had a fondness for that little guy...

I have to correct myself here...

It's actually spelled Q*bert. I even wrote his name wrong when I was a kid. I knew it looked off when I typed it before!

Sorry about that :)

I cried.

Hell no, that bastard caused me nothing but grief all throughout the about two minutes of fun that Q*Bert provides.
