How was the footage recovered?

After they land, Ben is going through cameras. He says something about 10,000 feet of Kodachrome film. I think Mission control says something about an RCA camera that documents all aspects of the mission.
Are we to assume that everything in the movie was transmitted back to Houston control on Earth?
If not, how would they have recovered the film?
The DOD guy sounded pretty concerned about contamination. It's hard to believe they would go back to the moon to recover the film, even if it was still in orbit with Ben's Russian lander.

Ya, and how did DOD know he was contaminated? It's like they were streaming the video footage - which is impossible.
