What year was this supposed to be...
when a SHOPPING MALL is absolutely packed with people? 1990??? One of many details that were unrealistic and/or scenes that were poorly directed by a crappy director.

shareThe novel was set in present time and was released in 2003. I'm on the latest book in the series and although it was released a decade after the first one, only 19 months have passed.
I agree that it's a bit unrealistic not because it's a mall full of people, but because Pico Mundo was supposed to be a relatively small town. I live in a suburb of Kansas City and my local mall is always packed.
ETA: Also, remember that they showed the outside mall signs that said "summer sale today only." That's probably why they chose August 15th. It wasn't just a random day at the mall.
I want to do to you what Spring does to cherry trees, but in a prison way.
The mall in my medium-sized hometown is still pretty full. I now live in a big city and the malls aren't as deserted as you'd think.
shareThere are two malls in my city. One is a graveyard that no one really goes to. The other was recently renovated and you can't even find a parking spot easily.
shareSome areas had too many malls to begin with, I have several in the area I live and only a couple are totally dead, a few are still busy as the old days and the rest are doing okay. The ones that have died seemed to be too greedy with the rent and then one day someone built a big strip mall right across the street where many stores moved to instead.
shareoh yes, many people at a public place! How absolutely ridiculous!
shareMy nearest mall, right here in 2016, is heaving with crowds seven days a week, so badly it's not pleasant to be there. Although having said that, I live in a huge city, but still.
As for this mall, it was a mall-wide sale day going on. Of course it would be packed.
