I've also heard that another version included Sidney staying put, but she and her family being stalked by Richie's mom. Of course in another version they were going to mention that the rest of them killed her when she wouldn't get on board, so who knows. Scripts can go through countless iterations. Nothing's really final until it hits the screen. And sometimes not even then, as George Lucas has shown

Exactly. Between rewrites, reshoots, and the editing room, what we end up with can bear no discernible relation to the original plan.
