how no Sidney will change things

Because since it seems like there was a script a while ago, Sidney was assuredly in it, and as the "lead," even if more screen time goes to Sam again. And so presumably there will have to be a rewrite that doesn't include her, if that version didn't already exist.

So it'll be interesting to eventually hear how the two versions differentiate, probably after the final product releases. For example, maybe in the version with Sidney, Kirby is the opening kill. But without Sidney, they retool it so that Kirby is alive and present through the whole thing and makes it out alive, to be the new Sidney, like a forebear over Sam. Stuff like that.

And now I guess it won't make sense for McDreamy to return.

I don't know but only a year in-between movies isn't a good idea for a Scream movie. It needs at least 2-3 years in order to be done to not risk losing quality. Otherwise you'll get schlock like the Friday the 13th series.

I can't imagine the setback losing Sidney will cause but they should be fine as long as they find a good replacement. After all, Halloween lost Laurie Strode for H4 but did just fine because Jamie Lloyd is arguably a better character.

I think it's because of the freshness of the success for #5 that made for the quick turnaround.

After all, Scream 1 and 2 had an even smaller gap, but just *said* there had been a few years between.

I'm still not entirely sure Campbell won't be in this. That's not 'fanboy-wishing', I just wouldn't be too surprised if something got hammered out at the 11th hour. It may mean that she wouldn't have as big a role as was originally envisaged, but I could see an appearance of some kind.
