Depressed....(spoiler s)
Great game with a pace reminiscent of classic film noir that admittedly may turn off gamers who need more kinetic action and possess shorter attention spans. I didn't play the game until long after it had debuted and all of the extended additions were released. This meant I was behind, but I got to play the whole thing in one full experience chronologically. I think that and in addition to the fact I leisurely played it over a long period of time and the compelling/human/flawed characters I felt really invested in the game. There was dread all though the proceedings that the whole thing was going to end on a downer but it was worse than I anticipated. Dead protagonist, no reconciliation, half the bad guys get away (including the two faced sh*t heel vice cop), Elsa left broken hearted, the assistant D.A, cuts some mysterious deal with the dirty Chief, etc. It can bum you out when a movie ends on downer but when you multiply that weeks of game play and contemplation the results can be kind of depressing. Frankly I wanted to reach into the screen and slap around the jerks at the funeral posing as supporters! Ah well, that's just the sign of a really involving game. It had it's flaws (repetitious, awkward body movement) but it was rich with success too. The uncanny face work, compelling cases, varied gameplay (although it didn't balance the time devoted to the different aspects enough), involving characters with believable arcs, amazing period detail and sharp writing were all commendable. I would have liked a little more resolution, or a slightly less depressing end, but I'll probably think about the whole thing way too much for a day or two and then move on to the stack of games I got to get to before the ps4 comes out! Anyone else get invested in this thing and wanted Cole to come storming into the church with a Tommy Gun, blasting away all the big phonies behind his coffin (and yes I realize that is an ill fit to the rest for the game.....just sayin' it would have been swell)?
