Why wasn't Robert arrested for his mistress' death?

I wonder why is that Robert wasn't arrested for fleeing the scene of an accident which killed his mistress Julie when he feel asleep at the wheel.

reply

No proof, and they faked "evidence" that the young man picked him up (with the license plate photo). They were hoping to get the guy him to talk; and if he had, Robert would have been arrested. I've seen enough of these movies to know that if the cops don't have evidence, the suspect won't be prosecuted.

They can't link him to the accident. They know about his affair and a lot of other things, but they don't have evidence to prove that he was the driver.

reply

I think they suspect an affair, but they don't know about it.

It might be strange for him to back Julie's gallery, but it's not proof of an affair. Her mother knows about his support for her, but apparently doesn't know about the affair.

reply

The pigs claimed they had his phone records/text messages and that they knew about the affair, but that still doesn't link him to the crime scene. Now whether they were lying about the phone/texts is another question.

reply

Having falsified the number plate evidence, they could easily have been lying about the other evidence. And how did they know about the affair? There was very little evidence to suggest they did.

reply

The pigs talked about the affair with each other, there's no reason for them to lie to one another. It's not particularly hard for them to get access to someone's phone records/text messages. They made a point of showing that the pig broke the rules with regards to the license plate, but the affair wasn't treated that way. They talked about it casually, almost as if they weren't surprised by it.

Wasn't there any video from the gas station where he washed up after the crash. That would put him at or near the scene.

One of the themes of the movie was how remote and protected from consequences and the law the rich are - the police had to hold off on him until they had a cast-iron case, because they knew he would "lawyer up" with the best representation money can buy, say nothing and put the onus on them to have to put a case together quickly.

They tried to lay the groundwork by flipping Jimmy - to get all their ducks in a row, if you will, before arresting him.

Because he is Richard Gere, It was an accident. Not some intentional act he plotted, so just in the name of keeping him a hero, It was written that he would get off.

reply

Richard Gere is Teflon Man. He slips out of ANY situation with ease.

Although not without some (possible) internal injuries or banged up ribs...
and lots of lost sleep.
