Nate Parker standout performance

Anyone else agree? I thought his performance was the highlight of the film. Gere was great as well obviously.

FEAR CHAOS PAIN

It was the first time I came away liking his work. Maybe he's better than I thought.

reply

Not bad at all. Never seen him in anything before this and I came away impressed. I particularly liked his penultimate scene with Gere at his characters apartment.

reply

Are you kidding? He played such a one dimensional token negro "homeboy" (ie. played himself) that the only possible reason I could see for his existence in the film was to keep the ignorant "where da nig gas at? rayciss!" crowd happy.

Haha, just re-watching it again now. He does all the standard ebonics buffoonery and also has all the "I know I sound like an ape but I'm smarter than you think" expressions down pat. It's hilarious to watch them try to act like humans in between their regular antics.

It's a stereotype that does them no favours, but they don't see it that way. They see it was "bein' real" and "representin'".

reply

I'm sure you'd be real pleased if someone got you involved in a crime.

Man, after reading the comments above, I'm a little upset you didn't see the racist undertone this dickhead made and your comment just validated it.

Wow, you're an idiot. Did you not catch the 'try to act like humans' comment? Was way off-base and racist and you're like, YEAH I AGREE. Dumbass.

The fact that you have "dark" in your username makes the racism in your post even more ironic.

Wow, I can’t believe the above few posts. Were they for real or are they from an Internet troll? I feel like I live in an entirely different world.

I thought Nate Parker’s performance was the best thing about this movie. His acting really pulled you in. He was riveting. He commanded the screen in every scene he was in. I didn't hear any “ebonics buffoonery.” His words were filled with warmth, thoughtfulness, intensity and reality. The acting from the other main characters (with the exception of Richard Gere) left me cold.

Homeboy playing himself and not acting? Do you know him personally? His bio says he’s married, has three daughters, and was an All-American in high school and college. Doesn't sound like a stereotypical “homeboy” to me. His character wasn't a “homeboy” either. He was getting his life together, in a long-term relationship, and saving up to go into business for himself.

Hostile for no reason? How about getting a frantic call at 2:30 in the morning from someone you haven’t heard from in years who you suspect may be involved in something illegal and is therefore putting you in jeopardy as well but yet you owe him and can’t say no.

Everybody but Tim Roth gave great performances in this, I thought all the supporting players were actually standouts in their parts. Tim Roth was the worst stereotype in this movie as the New Yawk detective. Nate Parker needed to give his character some street edge but at the same time he was a goal focused young man with a plan. I thought it was well done.

reply

Well, Nate's character being without street edge seemed rather nice to me ... he might represent the young black man of today, even if he does live in Harlem. If you recall, in Crash, there was a subplot devoted to minorities disliking stereotypes; perhaps this fit with that. I also have to say I disagree on Tim ... I have never seen Tim do anything so mainstream and masculine, but, then, I haven't really seen a lot of his work. But I liked him in this. I just feel it was unfortunate the character had to ... *spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't seen the movie* ... devolve into someone who cut corners.

I came to this thread though because, never having seen Nate Parker before, I think he probably has a great future. He is very handsome, a little white bread, maybe, as you say, but I don't think that will serve him badly. I wonder if he will have a future pretty much like Denzel's. He certainly has a good name to be a star, too. It seems to honor his heritage and at the same time seems established and easy to say.

He was really good, I also enyoed Brit Marling's performance, she wasn't that much in it but in scenes she had she was great.
