4.6??? Why are IMDBers so hard on Horror Anthologies?

Half of the segments were good (love you / sweets / visions) the other half wasn't or simply ok, but at least they were original stories cleverly brought together with the puppet show

It was a nice anthology, and I'd rather watch this than yet another remake

I cannot understand why this or the ABCs would get such low scores, for God sakes at least it's something fresh after the remake / torture porn / zombie overload!!

I dunno, man - I love, love, LOVE horror anthologies, and I couldn't find much to enjoy in this. I do agree that in most cases, IMDBers are unnecessarily dismissive of horror anthologies, but I think the score on this one is pretty legitimate.

None of my favs love you / sweets / visions caught your fancy?

I thought "I Love You" was terrific. Incredibly well done short - set my expectations high after the weak first one. Honestly, I thought "Sweets" and "Vision Stains" were weak. "Vision Stains" felt like a rough draft for a much cooler movie - perhaps some Cronenberg-esque body horror - and I felt like "Sweets" was a bit pretentious, as though it thought it was more clever than it was, especially with the final shot. As for the rest of the movie, I thought "The Accident" was nicely made and haunting, but it felt out of place, and "Wet Dreams" was kind of fun as a goofy little E.C. Comics throwback.

I dunno, I just felt like most of the shorts were really watery and unsubstantial. Watched it with my wife, though, and she raved about it for days - so I understand that it's all a matter of perspective.

I thought "Sweets" was the best of the bunch. Loved it!

reply

I dunno. I almost didn't bother with this one as I rely on IMDb to choose my movies. But tiring of Netflix's lack of choices, I watched out of desperation. I must say that I really, truly enjoyed this. A few segments were better than others but I didn't dislike any of them-a couple were intense. I guess I learned a lesson-to give more things a try...

Usually, I would agree with the notion that the horror genre is underrated here on IMDB, but this one.... this is why horror flicks get a rep. Horrible acting, dull and uninspired writing - it deserves the low rating.

This movie gets on my nerves, it's that bad.

reply

Maybe I value originality too much, but after the wave of clonic films of the last year, anything that is different appeals to me...

I won't say that it's a great anthology, but at least is fresh and it has its moments. 'Sweets' thinks too much of itself, but i think everybody'll agree that it's a visual joy

Or not - hey, each to his own!

Have you seen Antichrist by Lars Von Trier? Now if you want original cinema, that's the way to go, horrorwise. To a lesser degree, Melancholia (not a horror flick per se, more of an apocalypse movie).

reply

Yeah, saw them both - they are great, original films, but we these are ambitious/artsy cinema. TTB is pop cinema - I think it's much harder to be original within the pop genre. Lars VT has the freedom of making the movie he wants, you know what I mean?

Yes, I understand.

Do you use the term "pop" as in popular or "light in nature"?

Maybe the fact that something is "pop cinema" really means that it has to stay within its genre, and that in itself creates an unoriginal starting point.

reply

yes, popular as in "it's likely to be liked by many people"
Antichrist is a great film, but it's not easy to watch or appreciate and requires a certain taste I think

well, I think that pop is not necessarily unoriginal. Pulp Fiction appealed to the masses and on top of that was original (and a great film!)

All the stories were amusing to me. I feel it deserves a higher rating, even The Accident had its own sense of death and childhood horror. I liked the imagery of Sweets as well. The bright color food fetish parts. It felt very original. I thought the mix of drama and gore in I Love You was interesting too...I do not find any of the segments boring and they were all shot well with decent acting and good soundtracks.

Well, this one is pretty bad! It's disturbing and gross for the heck of it. However, a lot of other horror anthologies rate well on here (between 6.5 and 7.5). Tales from the Crypt, Vault of horror, and Beyond the Grave are well liked.

reply

I think the problem is more with the anthologies than the people watching them. The fact that there are a ton of *beep* remakes and other garbage films out there doesn't change the fact that this is a really uneven collection of shorts.

I've seen a few good modern anthologies, but most of them are just terrible. ABCs of death included (the second was especially bad).

Don't know about everyone and don't care really.. This movie is one of my most fav creepy movies... Maybe the only one in that category.. Regarding the first segment that one has splendid music score throughout entire episode so that becomes my favorite in entire film.

Agree ?
