Daphne isn't as bad as people make her out to be

Yes she did a felony, but she had just lost her father, I know Bay lost him too, but people grieve in different ways.
Bay has also done a lot of illegal stuff, like graffiti, buying alcohol underage, etc, yet, she gets a free pass?
I know that Daphne has had a lot of boyfriends, but this isn't like Pretty Little Liars, not everyone stays with the same lame boyfriend throughout the whole series.
Also, she CAN be a little bit selfish and short-sighted, but so can a lot of other people, she's only a teenager.
She may get into other people's business, but that's only because she's trying to help.
She does seem like she has a really good heart, she just makes the wrong choices most of the time.

A felony? A felony?

Daphne committed at least half a dozen felonies:

blackmailed a US Senator
stole cash from a wallet
purchased and snorted cocaine
bullied someone into joining her
pushed a couch off a dormitory roof (endangering pedestrians)
stole prescription drugs from her workplace
vandalized a construction site with a metal crow bar
poured sand into the gas tanks of bulldozers (costing hundreds of thousands)
assaulted her sister

In comparison, Bay put up art on other's property without permission.

I don't think Daphne was trying to help, when she did those things.

reply

And let's not forget that Bay was punished for the things she did. With buying alcohol underage, she got grounded and got quite the lectures (and hey, she did that while being freaked out about the fact that she was switched at birth. I still don't get why Daphne didn't react to that fact at all and seemed so nonplussed).
And with putting up graffiti, that got her in trouble, like, constantly. She maneuvered herself in situations which punished her for what she did.

But Daphne did not get punished for anything. She got away with stealing, assaulting Bay, pushing the couch off the roof, doing cocaine and even fro blackmail. The only thing she seemed not to get out of was the vandalism on the construction site, and even THAT she got away with!

But a good heart I have not yet seen with Daphne. When she gets involved in other people's business, it's either for her own good or she seems so superior reaching out to those underneath her. At least I don't remember any situation in which she actually tried to help anyone.

OP, seriously, you say Bay gets a free pass, when Daphne is never punished for anything she does?

Daphne is a rubbish character.

Its not your cookie!

Her father is John. She never considered Angelo her father and they only bonded over some lemon cake. If anything her grief came from her guilt from continuously trying to remove Angelo from their lives.

reply

Thank you! I never got why Daphne ever called Angelo her father. Her stepfather, maybe, since he married Regina and she was legally Daphne's mother.
But emotionally? He wanted to straighten things up with her, but she never connected to him emotionally.

reply

Daphne might've been mad at Sngelo at first when he returned but in time she forgave him

reply

Yes, but that is a huge way from connecting to him emotionally to the point of calling him her father.

reply

True. But they did have two years or close to it and they were closer than him & Bay.

Nope. Not true.

Neither girl was close to Angelo AT ALL. But Bay did have a biological connection to the man and those blood ties run deep. I could see Bay being absolutely devastated that she did not take the time to get to know the man who contributed half of her DNA.

Daphne has no reason to be upset, other than about Regina's original lie.

Just a few weeks before Angelo's death, at a party at the free clinic where Daphne was serving her community, Daphne yelled at Angelo unmercifully, telling him how selfish he is.

I do not see any closeness between them, until a few days before his death, and even that was tentative.

reply

Yes Daphne yelled at Angelo at the party-she was jealous if Abby & the fact that Angelo was sticking around for his new -third daughter-but didn't for her.Angelo didn't come back for Bay or to get to know her,he came back for Regina& Daphne to make amends, rekindle the flame with Regina ect.Daphne spent more time with Angelo especially in the episodes before his death-them making cake, them making dinner,Daohne bring the first& only one to find out that his restraint was belly up,he loved I with her & Regina.Bay barely knew or interacted with Angelo& admitted as much in his death episodes so why would she be devasated that he died when she barely knew him& confessed she didn't make time/effort for him?Just because Daphne & Angelo didn't share DNA means nothing as in some cases ,step parents, fosters parents ,adaptive parent can be closer to kids than the kids are to Thier birth parents.Yes Daohne was mad at Sngelo stfirstfor leaving her & Regina but she forgave him.Evfn when Angelo,Bay,Regina lived in the new house he had built,Angelo & Bay weren't close.I think that Bay & Daphne have two moms, two dad even though two of the parents aren't biological.Daphne was upset when Angelo died cause they were just getting close, sgpharing a love & talent for cooking.Daphne asked Angelo to move in to keepRehpgina safe-why would she do that if she didn't are about him,was still mad at him, didn't trust him ect?Angelo leaving when she was three gave Daohne daddy &abondonment issues.-she was hurt, mad cause she lived him, thought of him as her father,

I agree 100% that Bay barely knew or interacted with Angelo. She shared nothing with the man other than a biological connection that was never explored. You are absolutely right about that.

But I disagree with your presumption that Daphne did share something with Angelo. They made dinner together one night, and they baked one cake together a few weeks later. That's it. That's all they shared.

Daphne did not ask Angelo to move to the guest house, because she cared about him. She did it because she feared for her mother's life. Nacho had thrown a brick through the window at her business. Daphne did not have a lot of options, and Angelo was her mother's best protection. Plus, Angelo was married to her mother. I think Daphne had finally started feeling guilty for separating the married couple, as she should.

At least Angelo went to the movies and to restaurants with Bay. He chaperoned Bay's Valentine's Day party. He spoke for Bay at the honor board. They may not have had a father daughter relationship, but he shared a lot more with Bay than he did with Daphne.

And as Bay says in "The Homecoming" about Angelo: "He just waltzes in without warning, tells me he's here for 72 hours and then just expects me to drop everything and get to know him, risk pissing off Daphne and my parents. Ha ha, all three of them. I want to be mad, but I'm not. He's never done anything to me. How do I know what's true unless I hear what he has to say?"

Angelo was there for one reason and for one reason only, to get to know Bay. Yes, he eventually was excited to put things back together with Regina, and he had hopes for his relationship with Daphne. That's true. But Daphne had no memory of him being her father.

I still don't understand why Daphne claimed to be so upset about a man that she never really knew. When Angelo died, I think Daphne was really upset that she never had a father at all.

She had lots of photos, apparently that qualifies... well, for Daphne anyways.

The only sense I got from Angelo towards Daphne was that he wanted to apologise to her, to make amends for walking out. I never thought that he wanted to have a relationship with his sort-of daughter. And hey, it's not like she ever tried until shortly before his death.

What always upset me was how little Daphne cared about what Angelo meant for Bay. When it was about finding him, she got angry at Bay as if she had asked her for something so unreasonable. Bay wanted to meet her biological father, that was all. For a character sold to us as oh so smart, Daphne has always been ridiculously stupid: She did not understand Bay's wish to know more about Angelo, even while she herself was getting to know _her_ biological father. And when she was supposed to apologise for snapping at Bay, she just gave Bay a photo and that was that.

It shows throughout Daphne's entire interactions with the Kennishes and Regina: She wanted them for herself. She was glad to get to know her biological parents, but when Bay wanted to get to know Regina, Daphne got mad.
That girl is just incapable of sharing anything.

When Angelo died, I think Daphne was really upset that she never had a father at all.

In him or in general? Because she does have John, doesn't she? (That man, he would probably forgive her even if she ripped up Bay's throat... >_>)

I only started watching in season 4 and I looooved Daphne. Her drive and determination for college. Her mature attitude to her relationship with Mingo. I didn't even know people hated her until I came on here. I haven't caught up on earlier season (I watched about the first half of season one then stopped) and probably won't. Season 4 was awesome.

I never even thought about it that way, but you are right.

Daphne seemed so mature in Seasons 1A and 1B. That moment when she gave Bay her blessing to ride off into the night with Emmett on his motorcycle seemed selfless. It made me believe Daphne was the good person that most of Season 1A had built her up to be. Daphne's maturity had faltered a few times with Simone in Season 1B, but Daphne rose to the occasion, when she watched as Bay and Emmett rode off together on his bike.

Then, Daphne became a different character in Season 1C with Chef Jeff. I could accept the change, because Daphne was still a teenager. But she really faltered. The person I admired in Season 1A was gone. Daphne was making one huge mistake after another. It was awful. Daphne allowed men to be an awful influence on her (or maybe she was the awful influence on them). Nothing positive came from Daphne's interactions with Chef Jeff, Jace, and finally Nacho. (Jorge and Campbell tried to influence Daphne in a somewhat positive direction and both ultimately failed.)

But you are correct. In Season 4, Daphne's drive and determination for college are admirable. She does have a mature attitude in her relationship with Mingo, well, up until she allowed Quinn to mess up things for her. Season 4 Daphne is closer to Season 1A and 1B Daphne.

I don't know what happened to the character during Season 1C, 2, and 3. Daphne definitely went off the rails in those seasons.
