Do I have to watch Season 1 first?

Spatacus newbie here! I was just wondering if it would be okay for me to start watching Gods of the Arena first before watching Season 1 of Blood & Sand? Does the miniseries stand on its own or do I have to watch season 1 to understand what the hell is going on?

I watched the prequel first, and i'm glad I watched it that way.

Even though the prequel shows the ending of season one in the beginning?

I should've included that I was warned about that, so didn't actually get spoiled. But someone had already mentioned it, so I didn't leave it out to screw over OP.
