He's actually a good character. I did not care for him at first either but he matures as the show moves on, becomes a bit deeper.
I look forward to seeing him again as the series continues.

After watching the whole series, I decided it really is more about Crixus than Gannicus. If not for Gannicus' forced sex with Mellita, he'd have no significant part at all. The show is more about Crixus and his rise to fame and the early days of the Batiatus house than anyone or anything else.

I did think Crixus "caught on" a bit too quickly though. He admits he's never killed anyone, so he probably hasn't had much chance to fight with anything other than his bare hands. Yet in a few weeks he gets so good he nearly beats the house champ, and is able to kill one of the school's top gladiators his first time in the arena, before he's even taken the test? Just seemed like he got too good a bit too fast.

Since Gannicus is returning in Vengeance, it was important for us a viewers to see who he is and his history with the ludus.

And I think it was about Lucretia also. We see her go from this Domina who actually is kind of nice to her servants to a bitch because of what happened to Gaia.

The ludus would have needed a champion before Crixus rose to glory, so I can see why they introduced a character such as Gannicus. Competition and inspiration for Crixus. However I never liked Gannicus. The actor did a decent enough job, but the character was just so uninteresting. Less attention to him, and more focus on Crixus, Ashur, and even Naevia would have been welcome.

Loved how he was introduced. He was an over indulged rock star!
Then, as he became introspective, when he fell in love with his best friend's wife, we saw another side of the man. He actually had a conscience.
I maintain he was a good character and I want to see more of him in Vengence.
