People Misunderstand Gannicus

I have read way too many posts either a.) argue that Gannicus was just a thoughtless, one-dimensional hedonist or b.) fixate on how cool his whole rock-n-roll lifestyle was. To me Gannicus is alot more thoughtful than the first group gives him credit for and far more serious than the second group acknowledges. I think its important to recognize that he does have a clear raison d'ĂȘtre for why he is the way he is. Much of what motivates his character is the ever present reality that his life was not his own to command. Like every other gladiator, he finds a particular meaning in that lack of freedom in a way that makes sense to him. Oenemaus choses to see honor in a life of hard work and service to the ludus. Crixus finds meaning in glory through victory in combat. Spartacus on the other hand repudiates this very culture and goes through his own journey of radicalization as he increasingly recognizes the injustice of slavery. But for Gannicus the possibility he might fall to an opponent's blade or die the whim of his master compels him to live life to its fullest as if every day were his last. He says as much to Melitta when she chides him for his seemingly buffoonish behavior. Its his way of coping with the absurdity and brutality of a life where he must kill in order to stay alive. Since the only thing he can choose to be is happy, he will maximize his pleasure while he can. It is a rational and hopeful response to an irrational and hopeless existence.

I agree with that. He also became more introspective as time passed and affirmed that there was no honor in fighting for the house of Batiatus. How could there be when such vile acts were committed there?

reply

Very well written analysis of his character (I still want Oenomaus to kick his ass a little, though).

thoughtful peace and I agree. Also illustrates the depth of the series as a whole. It is much more than just sex and violence and hence one of the most compeling if not the most compeling 2 seasons of a show in recent times.

Gannicus matured, but was still able to wear the mask of the slave, when necessary. Beneath it, he was evolving into a better man.

Very good post, you basically summed up what I think about Gannicus as well :)

Gene Hunt: She's as nervous as a very small nun at a penguin shoot

He's a badass loner like Wolverine who leaves whenever people ask him not to leave.

I enjoyed reading your post, Ramonalejandrosuarez.

I liked the first few episodes of Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

He loved Melitta as much as he loved O(not in a gay way/ then again, it is ancient Rome). It's a little weird, but understandable. In the modern world, they may have gotten a condo together.

I can understand the attraction, but still had difficulty with the idea of someone wanting to be with a person that they KNEW was sleeping with their friend. On some level, that would just gross me out regardless of how cute the person was.

Just the discussion I've been looking for. Ive been seeing a lot of hate for gannicus here, nice to know some of the fans appreciate the character and his growth throughout the series. I agree with the OP and I cant wait to see what happens with him in series 2

He was forced to have sex with his best friend's wife, neither of them wished it, but fell in love as a result. Perhaps it was the only way that they could justify what had been done to them, the small ray of light in a black sea of misery!

Its important to note that not everything a character is and does and meant to be likable. A one dimensional character is one you don't care about. If they live or die your just meh.
