Crixus's mouth was always open

One thing I found really weird about Crixus in the prequel was how his mouth was always hanging open. He looks like a weird dropkick. But it looked forced. I'm pretty sure he would have been told to do that. (he doesn't do it in the other seasons). I actually mentioned it. Then in the final season, Spartacus or Gannicus actually mentioned how he used to be 'an open mouthed so and so' or something like that. It's pretty ridiculous. I would have rammed a wooden sword into his ugly open mouth.

Ive been rewatching this season and it's not just his mouth that is always open but he drags himself around too much. I would guess the directors were telling him to act like he has no self confidence and to act like he is struggling to learn. Probably just bad acting on his part. But when he finally wins in the arena and finds his "confidence", you see the Crixus from season 1.

It's painful to watch, imo, as he drags himself around and acts like he is always hurt or sick but I do like who his character becomes.

reply

Exactly! Im glad I'm not the only one that noticed it.

I agree, it is painful to watch - it just looks too 'forced'. Maybe it's because we've already seen the 'good' Crixus from season 1. I just think the 'mouth hanging open' thing is a bit overkill.

He was just learning how to fight and survive. Good character development imo, as by the end of the series he is an assured champion confident, strong an undefeated.

I would have issue if he started fighting like Gannicus from day one.

But why was his mouth drawling open all the time

reply

Because it shows he was just a scared little animal when he first started out. He was in a semi-permanent state of fear and shock until he straightened out into the champion.

He looks like a weird dropkick.

I am just rewatching gods of the arena and I noticed the same thing, particularly the dragging himself around as though he has no energy, and I find it a bit irritating to watch really...

reply

Yeah. He overacts the rookie part a bit. Luckily it's only a few episodes before he becomes the titan that is S1 Crixus.

LOL. I read this post after watching GOTA and I hadnt really noticed it. I went back and rewatched it with this post in mind and I could not help but laugh because it's so true. Just about every time he's onscreen up until maybe the last episode his friggin mouth is open. Thank you for this it has brought me much joy in the past few days.

The dragging his body part, I concluded with him being always exhausted after training so hard. In the scene where he fights Gannicus for the first time, I thought it was too much when he did that well. He should have had problems with only lifting his sword if he was that tired like he looked like.
