Well, that was more or less on par with my expectations... which is of course to say, awful.

I mean, here we have Dream of the Endless, the personification of one of the universe's most fundamental elements, someone before whom gods themselves bend the knee. So what should he look like? Ethereal, unearthly, inhuman? Naw, just have him look like the lead singer of some mid-2000s emo band, that should probably do the trick.

Also, Lucien is apparently a black woman now, because of course he is.

What’s wrong with his appearance? In the comics, he looks like a tall, very emaciated version of the Cure’s lead singer. In the trailer, that’s what he looks like too.

Now, as for the quality of the show, I’m sure it will on par with most TV or streaming superhero show. Passable, but nothing memorable.

If David Lynch were directing it, though…. Ah how wondrous it could have been….

Like I said, he is supposed to be a fundamental force of the universe. In the comic, he has chalk-white skin (not "pale", not "pasty" – literal, inhuman white) and white-on-black eyes that are described as resembling twin stars on a night sky.

Here, they have him with precisely none of those features, looking instead as... some guy.

It's all the more disappointing that they made this with the apparent blessing of the man who once very correctly observed:

But the fan base are fans. And they like the source material because it’s the source material they like. So if you do something else, you risk alienating the fans on a monumental scale. It’s not Batman if he’s now a news reporter in a yellow trenchcoat with a pet bat.

There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way.
