Age appropriate? Forgetting there are a lot of actresses in their 50s who are still gorgeous, it's no stretch that a hot-shot handsome aviator wouldn't have a girlfriend/love interest in her 40s or even 30s.
Don't forget that there is a history between Maverick and Penny Benjamin. By the time Maverick was at Top Gun the first time, he had already "gone ballistic" with the admiral's daughter. So, she would have to be old enough to have been 18+ then (we hope).

Again, yes, but you're missing my point - Penny Benjamin didn't have to be the love interest in this film - that's just the way they wrote it. It could have literally been anyone. The only comment I made is that a hot shot handsome and charismatic Navy aviator could very well have a girlfriend in her late 30s or 40s, and to be honest, no one in this day and age would doubt a guy like Maverick could even have a girlfriend in her 20s if that was his taste.
BUT! Since Penny Benjamin WAS written to be the love interest for Maverick, then unless she was 8 when Maverick had "history" with her, Penny would be mid/late 50s to early 60s, and Jennifer Connolly was perfect for this role.
I don't even think Connelly has aged as well as other actresses of a similar age. I mean considering how Connelly used to look. Marisa Tomei is 57 and she's hotter than Connelly. There are actually plenty of 50+ year old actresses who still look good in their 50's. Gillian Anderson is another example.

Plenty, as other posters have noted.
But not as many were themselves iconic actresses of the "Top Gun" era.
I have no doubt that Connelly herself was cast at least in part because she starred in so many 80s era films. Her presence is itself a nod to nostalgia, the era and screen time she'd shared with the likes of Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy and Molly Ringwald.
This is a good point. It needed to be more than just an attractive actress in her 50s. It had to be another 1980s hottie for the nostalgia effect that this movie relies so heavily on. Jennifer Connelly fit well.
