Much better than the original!

Full disclosure, I'm young, so I carry no nostalgia for the first one. I'd seen parts of it but decided to watch it in full before going to see Maverick. I found it cheesy and awkward and well, it has a homoerotic subtext.

I basically only liked the soundtrack and the pilot scenes.

This movie isn't as stylized. None of that annoying sunset tone cast over every shot.

The sound is much better for the jets too.

My only complaint, that love story tacked on. I didn't care for it. Who likes a chick who says you must buy everyone in her bar a drink?

So I didn't rate it for that element.

But that finale was so epic that it truely surpassed the original.

Critics agree, Top Gun is top fun!

They clearly have a long history. It's not as though he just met her on his new duty assignment and she forced him to buy a round.

It's also clear that he had a history of doing her wrong, as evidenced by their dialog together, his promise that he wouldn't leave her this time, and her daughter asking him not to break her heart... again.

So, there's a lot at play, including the fact the he probably owes more than that to her.

Yeah, Penny was briefly mentioned in the original when the carrier commander at the beginning mentioned Maverick having a history of being trouble with his “high speed passes by air control towers, and 1 Admiral’s daughter.” Goose mentioned the name “Penny Benjamin”.

Yes, Goose mentioned he "went ballistic with Penny Benjamin" LOL

Thats interesting about the love story I thought the first was much worse, it got bogged down in it at the expense of the movie. The romance between Maverick and Penny is tasteful and doesnt detract from the movie. Some have said Penny should have been more integral to the main narrative but I disagree, I liked the fact she had no military involvement beyond serving them drinks unlike Charlie in the first film.

Admittedly, half way through the film, after the beach football scene I remember thinking, the reviewers must have had their nostalgia goggles on but the third act of the film is one of the best third acts of any film I have seen ever.

Yeah I didn't find the first one to be anything special. In fact, just made him seem more like a naughty school boy flirting with the teacher. He is the average height of a 14 year old after all.
