Could Maverick have SPOILER?

... died in this film?

I honestly thought it was a possibility, given his selection of Rooster could've effectively "mended fences" with his one remaining "family member."

It occurred to me several times in the build-up to the mission.

I was especially cognizant of Kosinski in the director's chair - since his only other Tom Cruise film having also ended with Tom's heroic sacrifice

I don't even see Maverick's survival being critical to the "suits," since Cruise himself was among them, and clearly wanted this to be a labor of love, not a franchise cash-grab. He's got the Mission: Impossible franchise if he wants to continue.

I like that he survived. The heroic war sacrifice has become such a trope, that even though I admittedly would have felt it, I think the story does suffer a little with going that direction. I think the story does set up the sacrifice with "somebody's not coming home" but nicely subverts that. I think it makes the romantic aspect a little stronger too.

I personally don't think they'll continue this series, but the door remains open if they want. It's their option.

Completely agree. They subverted my expectations in this film much to my very pleasant surprise. I stayed away from spoilers. Top Gun was never a favorite movie of mine so I don't have a ton of attachment to the characters but I completely thought they were going to kill Maverick. I found that sequence where he is making peace with everything really poignant. When he's standing in the bar in his white suit and looking at Penny; that hit really hard. I just don't like death in movies, lol. I think that's why Top Gun never appealed to me. I hated Goose dying. So when he showed up alive, I was really happy. I even loved how they did it. The foreshadow it with that Black Bird sequence in the beginning. No way he survives that and, with no explanation, he's there. They don't even try to justify it and I kind of love it. I rather the story been about him moving on. Making peace with the past and finding someone he can love. That was a better story for me that a possible shock kill off of the character.

I also think they did a great job leaving it open for a sequel. From what I understand, that was a painstaking shoot, especially with the planes so it may never happen again. But I think they put it in a really good place with the new characters. And even if Tom isn't in a 3rd, they ended his story perfectly.

No because it makes me sad when a hero dies in a movie. The franchise made the mistake already in the original when Goose got killed. That was enough. Maverick needs to live

Same. I still hate that Tony died in End Game. Felt right...was good character growth...it made sense...but I don't F'ing care! I don't ant to see my heroes die! lol I hate sad endings to films. I get why they do it but nothing will ruin a movie for me more than a bitter sweet/sad ending. I hated The Dark Knight Rises...Didn't love End Game. I want to leave a theater feeling good and hopeful. I think The creators of this movie gave us all exactly what we wanted and I really respect them for that.
