‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Set To Take Breath Away With $146M+ Memorial Day Opening, Best Ever For Tom Cruise – Box Office

https://deadline.com/2022/05/top-gun-maverick-box-office-1235034420/

FRIDAY EVENING UPDATE: Top Gun: Maverick at this Friday night hour is on its way to a $51M Opening day (which includes $19.3M previews). It would not be shocking to wake up on Saturday morning and see that the sequel has edged out Iron Man 2 ($51.2M) to become Paramount’s top opening day ever. Already, the sequel is Tom Cruise’s best opening day ever in U.S./Canada besting Mission: Impossible – Fallout‘s first day of $22.8M by 124%.

51.8 for Fri (with previews). 150m 4 day estimate now. Getting A+ CinemaScore.

Headed to 1 billion by July 4.

What do you think it says about audiences and cinema goers in the U.S. specifically? Do you think the popularity reflects an urge to feel good about America again?

reply

It says we are ready for movies, something fun and uplifting. I am glad to hear that they reversed the decision not to pander to China, but the box office is dead there anyways. I hope its a movie Americans can feel good about America again. Although this movie was supposed to be released in 2020, so there is a chance it might have anti Trump or MAGA rhetoric, if it did, I sure hope it was edited out. I am hopeful its just a good fun movie with no wokeness or SJW stuff.

reply

It’s good to hear you talking optimistically JoWilli. Always enjoy your haymaker punches against some of the crazies on here

reply

lol, thanks I appreciate it. I try to convey my thoughts and opinions the best I can.

reply

100%. It was almost odd to watch a movie which celebrated American military power again. It was a bit too schmaltzy, but sure was great fun to watch.

reply

I hope that IS what it signals.

I'm waiting to see the film with my dad when I fly home here in a few days, so I haven't caught it yet, but I'm happy as fuck to see such high scores, positive reviews and massive box office. It seems like Cruise, Kosinski, and all others involved hit a home run.

I hope the film is very patriotic and Ra-Ra USA.

reply

How much is a ticket nowadays? Of course Lalaland loves ignoring inflation so that they can put out press releases about new records.
"The average ticket price made available to the public is $12.96, while the average ticket price for a Top Gun 2 PLF ticket is $16.41."
Do higher prices always apply to new movies?

reply

Went to see it at a theater that serves food. Last time we went, the cost of a dinner (pretty much bar food) was outrageous, so we cut costs by eating dinner beforehand and sneaking in a little candy.

reply

There is no such thing as “a new record” or “an old record,” contrary to popular, ignorant myth. There is only “THE record,” meaning “the current record.” People are so ignorant. They thought the 21st century began with the year 2000.

When a record is advanced, there is no “old record.” There is only 1 fucking record. There might be “the previous high mark.” The word “record” is SPECIFIC and must not be used foolishly.

This applies to ALL alleged sports “commentators.”

Duly noted.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Deep-Sixes ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End’ For Memorial Day Opening Record With $156M – Monday AM Update

https://deadline.com/2022/05/top-gun-maverick-box-office-1235034420/

Epic movie!

reply

Yeah but you said "Memorial Day Opening Record" instead of just "record."

You ignorant fool! 🤣🤣🤣

reply

Yeah, I agree, its a massive new record set by Tom. I am hopeful this movie wins some awards next year.

reply

MONDAY AM UPDATE: Paramount/Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick has beaten Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End fair and square for the Memorial Day opening 5-day record (+ previews) at the domestic box office with $256M. While easily Tom Cruise’s best opening of all-time, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is the common denominator of the two largest Memorial Day weekend openings at the domestic box office.

reply

There is no single metric that would make for an apt comparison. If you went by admissions, there are way more people on earth now than 100 years ago. Still, older movies might have comparably high rates of admissions because there were fewer entertainment options. The CEO of Netflix famously remarked that Fortnite was a bigger competitor than Hulu.

reply

But why is a TG2 ticket more expensive? Does this apply to all new releases or just blockbusters?

reply

Not all movies or all tickets for movies, but big movies where "PLF" is applicable. The premium is for tickets to IMAX and other similar immersive auditoriums. Your quote is just showing the difference between a premium large format ticket and a regular ticket. But they may boost a little for regular tix if the movie is pre-sold or coming in hot.

reply

1 billion just like I said! lol

reply

There is no such thing as “a new record.” There is only “THE record.” The “old record” is no longer a record of any kind. It is history. Something may set A record, but it is neither “new” nor “old.” It is THE record, period.

This is 1 of the many things that I despise about alleged sports reports my. Sports: the dumb bastard branch of journalism.

reply

Tom Cruise is the biggest movie star in history, I hope he sets the record with this incredible film. Screw the haters. Full disclosure, I'm a Cruise fanboy.

reply

Who are you? His publicist? There are many stars. But nobody is THE greatest star. If Cruise really was that great, he wouldn't rely on nostalgia and inflated ticket prices to have another hit.

reply

*Spoliers*

No wokeism, no politics, just good old fashioned action, jets & good vibes. Entertainment for all sides of the aisle. That’s Hollywood at its best. We need more of that.

reply

It's shocking how noticeable the lack of wokeism in this film really is, when everyone is looking for some, and there's none to be found. Nothing, just like you said, this is a straight entertaining film that should appeal to anyone. Mega points to the internet critics though, they'll search high and low for ANYTHING to bitch about.

reply

As George Steinbrenner said, attendance records are not the $, it’s the “fannies in the seats”.

Start publishing THOSE numbers and I’ll pay attention on how well a movie opens.

reply

You can just divide it by the price of a ticket... not hard.

reply

Ticket prices are not universal. They cost more in LA than say Syracuse. They vary nationwide.

reply

He already acknowledged he is not American, so he did not know that.

reply

I replied to Rorikon’s first (and only) post in this thread. I was “talking” to him, not someone who said he was not from the US.

reply

By that logic you were answering @JoWilli, and @Rorikon interjected, but you were OK with that?

But anyway, you don't sound like someone I want to talk to, so just let me put you on ignore.

reply

Wow. Really? Whatever.

reply

The theater I was in was completely full except for the first row.

reply

yeah, its the same everywhere, people love this movie.

reply

Def the best movie of 2022.

reply

I think it was pretty much a given that it would be huge. It's definitely not a surprise by any means. Tom Cruise is a humongous draw and Top Gun was a blockbuster in it's time. Good for Tom. 👍👍

reply

Keep in mind that movie tickets cost a lot more now, and the box office totals are never adjusted for inflation.

They should report how many people attended, for consistency over time.

reply

My daughter works in a cinema and she told that the theaters showing TGM are packed. This movie is already a huge hit.

reply

Trump and non-woke movies are why.

reply

What are you babbling about? Do you even know what you are saying?

reply

It's only $124 million. Below expectations. Then consider that tickets prices have doubled since 1996. So it would equal $-62 million in 96. Shows that Hollywood is full of it and their records mean sod-all.

reply

124m is for 3 days. That's not below expectations. You're not distinguishing between the weekend and a holiday weekend, which includes the Monday. 151m is for 4 days, not 3.

1.) Top Gun: Maverick (Par) 4,735 theaters Fri $52M, Sat $38M, Sun $34M, Mon $27M, 3-day $124M, 4-day $151M/Wk 1

reply

I think 151M is a little low. I've heard 261M.

reply

Not for domestic alone.

reply

Top Gun: Maverick made $36.7M yesterday, -3% from its $38M Saturday. The three-day stands at $126.7M, which is still second best among Friday-Sunday starts for Paramount after Iron Man 2 ($128.1M).

EntTelligence reports that 11.6M moviegoers have seen Top Gun 2 to date, which is third biggest attendance during the pandemic era (since Q2 2020) after Spider-Man: No Way Home (20.6M) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (14M) for an opening weekend.
