Stop embarassing the film industry

Hollywood should stop embarassing the film industry and quit this ridiculous wave of remakes of great and aclaimed foreign films.

Old Boy, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Let the Right One In, Brothers and now The Secret in Their Eyes?
What's Next? Amelie? Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? Talk to Her? La Dolce Vita?!!

Come on! You can do better than just recycling other people's ideas.
If you wanna remake films, at least remake those films that had a potential to be good but ended up being bad, not great films.

Or go have your own original ideas, dammit!
But just give us a break.

Agreed. A bunch of over-the-title stars will have a huge payday for giving American moviegoers what they really want - a hall pass excusing them from having to sit through the brilliant 2009 film with (oh no!) subtitles. The new movie may be known someday as the slapstick version of an Argentine classic.

reply

The Hollywood film police are coming to arrest you and force you to watch this, Clockwork Orange style.
Oh wait, that's not going to happen.
Stay home and watch the original over and over.
Problem solved.

all work and no play make jack a dull boy.

reply

Lol.
The problem is the huge number of people who will see this but have never seen the original one.

reply

So what's the problem? And then they might be interested in seeing the original, like me. I wasn't expecting much since I don't care about Nicole and Julia, but I would rate this an 8/10, it kept me interested throughout.
Plus, the original will always exist, it's not being confiscated because a remake is being released.

all work and no play make jack a dull boy.

reply

Exactly but some people here are way too emotional and they're overreacting, the original won't go anywhere

reply

You may not mind people buying other people's ideas and taking credits for it. And that's fine. But a lot of people do and you should be fine about it too.

Although I do care about the actors involved in this projet, I would rather see them starring in a completly original story, not one that we already know how it is going to end.

It's *impossible* to remake this brilliant original movie because of its powerful Argentinian national connotations. On the other hand, the original actors a far better than Kidman, Roberts and the actor. "If it's not broken, don't touch it. .." says an old adagio. This will be a disaster equal to the awful American "9 Queens".

reply

I don't mind films being remade. Hamlet has been retold how many times, on stage and in film? I certainly am not comparing Secret in Their Eyes to Shakespeare, but if a filmmaker has a vision of a story that has already been told, and that vision brings something unique to a familiar story, I say go for it.

Old Boy, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Let the Right One In, Brothers and now The Secret in Their Eyes?

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, both versions, were bloody amazing. And Let the Right One In, again, both version, were also critically hailed and outstanding films. The American versions just as good as the original in my opinion. Also add The Departed to that list as well.

Do most remakes suck? Certainly. But if you get talent behind and in front of the camera you can still make a hell of a good film.

reply

I hate to break this to you but they are in fact remaking La Dolce Vita and I think this from the same company who's remaking Memento.

I hate to keep myself from vomiting when I heard this.

reply

Or maybe you should stop taking remakes so seriously? Regardless of how good or bad a remake may be, the original classic will always remain the original classic.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Let Me In were both very successful, well-done remakes of foreign film. Same goes for The Ring and The Grudge.

People always over-react when it comes to remakes. It's just the same story being told through the eyes of a different director. That's all.

Respect what you have 🌌
