Good lord when did Julia Roberts start looking like Amanda Plummer
Those bangs are killing me
shareI could barely recognize her. She looked like a mummified fish.
shareAgreed, she looked like hell even before her daughter's death.

I just caught the movie on DVD. Powerful scene by Julia Roberts with her daughter. Then, through the remainder of the movie, the only aspect about Julia Roberts that had me in awe was how she looked since I've last seen her in a movie. Was she supposed to look that way for the movie or what...?
Eram quod es, eris quod sum
Seems pretty clear they were going for a strong contrast between hers and Kidman's characters.
For Jess, the daughter was her core ("the thing that make me me"), while in contrast Claire was more focussed on her career.
Claire's engagement and marriage was made out to be a convenience, and she chose that and her duty as a law officer ahead of the attraction she felt for Ray and the sympathy she felt for Jess.
I saw the difference in the way the characters handled their appearance as reflecting and reinforcing the difference in the characters. Jess started relatively mumsy and let herself go even more once she'd been broken by the death of her daughter. Kidman was more controlling - using her appearance to get what she wanted.
Towards the end this was all flipped to some extent when we discovered that actually Claire *was* prepared to hide what Jess had done, and that she *would have* chosen Ray if he'd had the balls to go for it. Her appearance had been part of the way these aspects of her character had been being hidden both from us and from Ray.
