Question about Ed

There's a scene towards the end of the second season where Ed and Frank are arguing about being in the resistance and Frank mentions something about joining up in the Reich where Ed replies that he obviously wouldn't be accepted there. Frank then responds to Ed that he wouldn't be accepted either. Is that ever explained why? Is there an implication that Ed might be secretly gay? I can't think of anything else since he would probably pass the racial purity tests.

reply

Ed was sickly and thus would be killed.

Frank was Jewish.

If this is Locke, then who's in there?

reply

Ed had a lung condition but it appeared it was curable and he could still be useful to society. I'm not sure if that alone would have him deemed unfit.

reply

His lung condition/damage is chronic. It is treatable, but can't be cured. When Julianna was studying with Thomas, she brings up Ed, and it is implied that he would be deemed unfit and killed (to ease his suffering).

He was still a productive member of society, but he was physically limited and could never serve in the military again (and likely has a shortened lifespan). The same way they made a big deal about her maybe being unable to bear children when applying for asylum. While outwardly healthy, neither could ever mirror the perfect Aryan archetype.
