Episode 8 Question

How did Heydrich know that Heusmann was to become leader after Hitler had died, and why did Smith need that information? I mean Smith would have found out anyway.

reply

He wanted to find out the ring leader and it just so happens to be Heusmann whom was the acting chancellor appointed by hitler.

How did Heydrich know that Heusmann was to become leader after Hitler had died,

Smith correctly assumed that Heydrich wasn't the ringleader, but he didn't know who the top man was. So the ruse to make Heydrich believe that the ringleader's plan had succeeded was to get Heydrich to reveal who that top person was.

"Heil Heusmann!"

and why did Smith need that information? I mean Smith would have found out anyway.

He needed to find out who that person was so he could stop him. He probably assumed it was a known leader, such as Himmler or Goebbels. After all, Smith probably thought, Heusmann was just an engineer temporarily appointed as councillor until that new, scheming leader could take his place.

But when Heydrich revealed to Smith that Heusmann was in fact the actual mastermind, he realized that they were "too late" to stop that person from taking power, because he had already taken Hitler's place.

Recall Heusmann telling his son Joe that it was Hitler's plan to appoint Heusmann because of a previous incident. When Hitler was sick before and someone was appointed to take over, that person and their family immediately became assassination targets. But then Hitler didn't die.

This time, it was Hitler's hopes that appointing a relatively benign councillor would avoid that outcome. Little did he know how scheming Heusmann actually was.

Brevity is the soul of wit.

They were trying to root out the remaining Heydrich conspirators, who were still active, attempting to take advantage of Hitler's impending death, and start the war with Japan through Diels' defection with the Crown Prince shooter's info (Diels was a conspirator).

They assumed that Diels' defection was a contingency plan put in place by Heydrich. They got him to let his guard down by letting him believe this part of the plan had succeeded ("San Francisco is flattened"), make him think that his fellow conspirators had taken control of the Reich, and were taking steps to have him returned to Germany to be installed as chancellor.

They expected a circle of traitors acting behind the scenes taking advantage of the power vacuum on behalf of Heydrich, they were surprised that Heydrich wasn't the ringleader himself (but they might have allowed for the possibility, keeping their language ambiguous).

reply

Because that was the plan all along.

The assumption from Hitler's camp was that Heussman would be a stooge until the next coup. However, he was part of the larger conspiracy all along to kill Hitler and wipe out Japan and remain Chancellor.

Smith need that information?
Smith needed the info because he & his family would be targeted as evidenced by the arrival of the SS troops sent to "help" Smith.

He had all the admissions from Heydrich except the name.

The weird thing is that it seems like he could have pulled the ruse all along.

If I were you, I'd wanna be me too.
