SS officer Smith Rufus Sewell is the only compelling character on this..

...show...

I just could not bring myself to care for the other actors or characters except himself and those he cares for.

The other characters are just really cookie-cutter, especially the resistance.

And, Joe is so lacking in charisma...

Oh, the Asians? Terrible, so thoroughly devoid of humanity.

reply

I agree about Joe. No charisma at all.

reply

I was so surprised when I became sympathetic to a character whose escape from death disappointed me early on in season 1.

The writers gave John Smith a family to love, fight for, and protect.

The writers gave the resistance -- film.

So dumb.

I really want to give this show, and its writers, a fair chance, but the whole film gimmick is just dead in the water.

I don't care about these films. I thought Stephen Root as the man in the high castle was laughable, and not in a good way.

Show the resistance actually fighting for something worthy. We will liberate prisoners. We will save lives. We will produce art. We will do *something.*

but they don't. They're just chasing after film whose value I can only guess at.

Of course we care most about John Smith. He loves his son. He loves his wife.

They also had friends, relatives, lovers and their political beliefs.

The films aren't a small thing either. They aren't fictional or propaganda films. Imagine having access to media from parallel universes. I'd risk getting in a lot of trouble just for that.

Hitler is the most powerful man in that world and he obsessively collects them, as would anyone who could. I was curious about whether he really has monopoly on legal ownership of them.

It would be interesting if the Emperor or someone else had some, too. Also, now that Hitler is dead, what will his replacement (Himmler, I guess) think of them? Or maybe he has a bunch already in some isolated SS castle.

reply

One thing that Smith needs to make sure of is that Himmler never sees those films. If he were to see them and put together that the Bikini Atol film wasn't from their reality and that Japan does not in fact have the bomb, it wouldn't be good for Smith at all.

I'm liking the portrayal of the resistance so far. The typical Hollywood route is to show resistance fighters through rose-colored glasses. But the reality is normally a lot more complex and morally ambiguous. These are desperate people in desperate times. I mean, they DO liberate some prisoners in San Francisco, but of course the result is just even more innocents being killed...which is precisely what they wanted to happen. How many other shows/films would be so honest about insurgent tactics?

reply

Excellent excellent points, totally agree.

reply

He's compelling because of an incredibly well written character and on top of that because Rufus Sewell is pretty much owning the role.

I really liked all of the characters in the first season, but so far, all I care about is John Smith. Either way, I'm happy with the show - still rating it a 9/10 (only on episode 8). It's totally satisfying all my Fringe needs and wants...

After watching season 1, I similarly had issues with the acting, but after season 2, I'd point at the dialogue and storyboards as more of an issue in season 1.

Juliana, Frank and Joe just didn't have anything meaningful to say in season 1. They talked a lot, and forced exposition... but they were more confused than anything, wrestling with what they believed it and which side to work with. They had a lot of screen time, and of course moved the plot along, but weren't interesting.

Season 2, I thought it was a good idea reducing their screen time, expanding layers to the story (supernatural elements) and seeing them in family/friend settings as opposed to dodging bullets.

You gotta admit Brennan Brown was pretty funny as the antique dealer, especially as he bonded with DJ Qualls' character.

I think Smith and Togami are the most interesting characters. Togami in the other reality kept me interested, and everything with Smith once Hitler dies is great. The Japanese Inspector (can't remember his name) was pretty good as well.
Juliana is a step down from them. Frank was a character that they seemed to have no idea what to do with in season two. He just got annoying. DJ Qualls character and the antique dealer were good, though. You're exactly right that Joe has no charisma. He was doing interesting things that were always just bland because of him.
