Second, the writers are not idiots; you clearly don't understand the ways of the Nazi Party. Thomas was obviously brainwashed into Nazi ideologies; he was a grade-A student of the Nazi way of life and his dad was one of the highest ranking Nazi officers in the world. Why do you think he got invited to that trip in South America? I mean look at him; he wears their flag proudly on his arm, he studies their laws and ways of life, he was a proud Nazi.

The entire Nazi regime was about brainwashing. Thomas was sadly a victim to it; because the laws declared him "defective", he accepted it without hesitation, and voluntarily committed himself to be executed. He thought he was dying for and serving his country proudly by allowing himself to be killed for his defect. The sad part is, there are different forms of the disease, and who knows how severe it actually could have been. But the Reich would not give him that chance; defective is defective by their laws.
