Better Without Supernatural Aspects

I would prefer the show without any of the supernatural nonsense.

The premise that Germany and Japan won, is interesting enough to carry the show. It doesn't need the movies or the traipses into alternative universes.

Whenever they go supernatural, my eyes glaze over. They may as well have Jesus show up.

There's no way to really know this.

In order to work, the resistance would have to be amped up which means it becomes more generic.

The story as told without the sci-fi would not happen.

If I were you, I'd wanna be me too.

It's not supernatural, it's science fiction.

No, really, they're very different things.

What's the scientific mechanism for going into an alternate reality and bringing back a film? Oh right, meditation. Real scientific.

reply

Crossing to an alternate timeline is science fiction, regardless of the method used. They're not conjuring up visions in a pot of snake oil, they're actually crossing alternate realities and bringing physical objects with them.

So we can go with what IMDb calls it: "Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller".

The book itself is listed on Goodreads as as "Science Fiction", "Alternate History", "Dystopia". Amazon lists it as "Alternate History", "Science Fiction", "Fantasy".

Well the book did have one crossover scene as well as the mystery about the alternate history that was written as a book instead of films. What I didn't like in the book is Juliana going to the High Castle, harassing the guy about what he knew about an alternative reality, and then deciding she didn't want an explanation and leaving. The end. I know that it was written open ended, but I'm the kind of person that likes having things wrapped up with a bow on top.

What you're calling "supernatural" is an IMPORTANT aspect of the whole show! You need read the book by Phillip K. Dick to understand the importance of the alternate reality/universe concept. As other posters have said, the story line is about alternate realities.

reply

You know something, I completely agree with you on this. In fact I thought that would be the premise of the show from the advertising of the first season but right from the first moments of the first season we were told of this "multiverse" theme of this story. As a sci fi fan, I was intrigued but as also a history buff, I agree I would love preferred it without the science fi element.

The supernatural aspect is my favorite part of it, so I don't agree

I liked the idea of the films, but hated the horrible explanation for them. I was expecting a conspiracy of some kind. Ridiculous. This series could have been a 10/10.

The show hasn't actually given an explanation for it. If you think that everyone does it by meditation because you saw Tagomi meditating before he crossed, you might be end up being surprised or disappointed.

But in fact, there has been no such explanation.

It would be completely within the spirit of Philip K Dick's work if some kind of altered state of consciousness (plus pre-existing ability and one's double in the world you're going to being dead, probably) did cause it.

In other novels by him, people have been sent back in time or to alternate universes by drugs. Not that they hallucinated that they went there, or saw a realistic vision of that time or place, but physically went.

I think in one case, a guy was stranded in another universe because someone else was high on some futuristic controlled substance. PKD was a big fan of drugs, as you've probably guessed.

reply

I would suggest that you should watch Fatherland instead then. The alternate timelines/universes idea was a key theme of the book, even if it didn't go as far as the show is going with the concept.

I said the same thing in an older thread.

Nazis win WW II is one gimmick, and a good one

Multiverse timelines is another gimmick and for me it's just one too many. I stop taking the show seriously during those scenes.

Ya can't always get what you want.
