WHERE THE HELL ARE ITALY?

Why is Italy not mentioned in this? Or am I missing something. Italy were an ally with Germany so they should have had some ownership of the US?? Like Japan??

reply

Italy may not have played an important enough role in the defeat of the US to merit an occupation zone and may not be powerful enough to demand one of the senior partner in their alliance.

reply

I guess they probably just were allowed to keep Italy! Having rulership in your own country under Nazi control would probably be a big deal in it's own right.

I'm only 3 episodes into S2 - do we ever find out how the rest of Europe is affected by the Nazi's winning - are we to assume they have control everywhere over there?

reply

Why stop at Italy? What about the rest of Europe, or all of those Eastern Block countries, or Russia, or the sub-content, or (etc., there are something like 200 countries around the world, many of which were impacted by the war).

This is a story about the major Axis and Allied powers after Nazi Germany, with Japan, won WWII. Italy was not a major power.

How they factor into this reality is speculation since they are not mentioned, but it doesn't matter. It's not in the scope of this story. Or at least, not at this point.

Brevity is the soul of wit.

Well, apart from stuff like John Nance Garner being the US president, Reinhard Heydrich being alive (was assassinated in June 1942), the war itself being longer (the Washington DC atomic bombing happened in December 1945) and ending in 1947, more or less many other things appear to be the quite same. In real world Germany took over Italy in September 1943 after Mussolini's fall because of Allied invasion of Sicilia. So at that point, Italy basically disappeared both in real and fictional world.

reply

Except that in the show's timeline there would most certainly have been no Allied invasion of Italy in 1943 because without US support the British wouldn't have been able carry out such an operation. To put it another way, a timeline in which Germany was in a position to successfully carry out a trans-Atlantic invasion of the United States in early 1946 cannot also be a timeline where Germany was forced to launch Operation Achse in September 1943 to remove the Italian government.

reply

Think of it from German's POV: italians aren't German people. In reality, if they won the war, the would most likely take out the Italians. Plus, from the show, we know that they drained the Mediterranean Sea - that would be a huge problem to most Italians.

reply

Actually, if I understood the discussion between Joe and his father correctly and the objection from the guy at the Berlin party mentioning environmental issues, on the show they are only proposing to drain the Mediterranean. It hasn't been completed yet. (This is a difference from the novel where they had actually gone ahead and done it already by the time of the story.)

reply

If Indians are classed as Aryan people why wouldn't Italians be as well? Italians were accepted still even though they weren't high status in the Aryan race, they weren't singled out by Germans

reply

Indians were of course never classed as Aryans by the Nazis. They appropriated the swastika, the name Aryan and other things from Hindu mythology, but that's all.

reply

There's no indication on the show that Italy participated in the invasion of North America, so there's no reason to think that it would have been given any territorial concessions by the Germans. The show has not explained what, if any, territory Italy holds, but in the novel Italy controlled much of North Africa and the Middle East as part of a new Roman Empire.

reply

South of Austria.
