I apologise for fellow U.S. people. Some of us do prefer the shows in the country of origin. I wish the shows were easier to get over here though.

Well, the numbers are a bit misleading.
69% of Americans have given it a rating of 8-10, and practically none have given it 2-7.

And then there's the 20% with a 1 rating, dragging the average down...

I will call them fake ratings, considering a mistake i once noticed here on IMDb.
They had put the wrong release date on the second animated Olsen Banden movie and people already had given that one several ratings, very poor ratings that is.
Just one problem with that, the movie was still in development and wont be released before October 10th!

Naturally i contacted IMDb about this and got it set straight, so that these fake ratings got deleted and correct release date was added.

This show is awesome. I like it better than the US version.

I liked life on Mars here in the USA. I advent seen the UK version because I already know the twist.

Off topic, but the Life on Mars USA's ending is COMPLETELY different to the UK version. The endings have nothing in common. That is one of the reasons I didn't like the US version was because of the ending. The US version took out many plot twists in the normal episodes too.

The UK's ending was much more satisfying and very epic. The US version seemed sloppy and boring. Also, the US versions actors were worse in my opinion (yes, I prefer Philip Glenister in Hunt's role over Harvey Keitel!)

Oh, Absolutely watch the UK version. Night and Day difference between them. The UK version was so much better that they had a spin-off Ashes to Ashes which went 3x8e seasons just to keep the character of Gene Hunt alive. In the UK version, it was Gene Hunt while in the US it was Harvey Keitel playing an a$$hole cop. And when you are done with that, check out the original BBC 6 x 60 min version of State of Play, which has several of the Life on Mars actors. And after that, make a covenant with yourself never to watch the US version of anything first. Goes triple for House of Cards and Shameless.

I think it does depend very much on what you watch first though.
I watched the first to season of the US Shameless and I liked it a lot (although a bit stupid that almost everyone is white) and I tried watching the British version but just couldn't get into it. Every character felt wrong. So I imagine that it would be the same when watching the British one first and then trying to watch the American.

I think this is very true. I watched the UK Shameless first, and although I wanted to like the US one, (big fan of Macy), I just could not see him as Frank. Sane with the US Office. I do however prefer All In The Family to Til death Us Do Part, and Sanford and Son to Steptoe And Son probably because I saw the US on first.

Speaking as an American, I understand your frustration and would probably feel the same way if the tables were turned. That being said, the American version of The Bridge actually makes fairly heavy use of subtitles for an American production, which I like since it adds to the authenticity. We're not incapable of watching subtitles or foreign productions in general. I would say we're just less familiar/comfortable with other cultures/languages than Europeans are, and since the U.S. has historically dominated the movie industry, we don't see a need to watch many foreign films.

That is a fair explanation. Old habbits die hard.
I am Danish we are no better ourselves regarding foreign shows/movies with Danish subtitles. We are very accustomed to watching Amerian/English shows with Danish subtitles though, but when it comes to watching e.g. German or Italian shows, most of us are uncomfortable with relying entirely on subtitles to be able to follow the plot. In Denmark we don't dub the foreign speak into Danish, there is simply not a budget for doing that.

Do you not dub foreign show into English? Would you always prefer the foreign show to be redone with American actors?

Anyway, I think dubbing is a violation to the culture. On a hotel Holiday in Germany I once saw a small part of a Marilyn Monroe movie, how awful to hear her speak German!

And that's the heart of the issue. Reading subtitles requires an extra level of concentration that many people don't have the patience for.

I don't believe I've ever seen a non-American TV show, to be honest. I've seen a smattering of foreign movies, some subtitled and some dubbed. But I agree about the dubbing. It lowers the production quality and compromises the integrity of the original, so I would always choose subtitles if I were watching a non-English program.

No, I don't think I would. I would be much more likely to see a show if they did, but it would be nice if Hollywood could come up with some original ideas instead of remaking everything in sight, old and new.

I'm from Sweden and for me it's easy to follow an entire movie where I know nothing of the language as long as it has subtitles. For me it's more that I know the American and Brittish movie and tv-serie culture so I have a easier time judging what I will like. With movies from other countries it's more difficult. Specially since the ones getting known in my country are most likely quiet heavy ones and not something I would watch on a regular day.

Nowadays, the networks even remake British TV shows, but in the 1960s, they used to show British shows like The Avengers, The Prisoner, Secret Agent (Danger Man), and The Adventures of Robin Hood without remaking them.

It was more common to go see foreign movies, too, like A Man and a Woman (France) or some of the Scandinavian and Italian films.

True. It seems American interest in world culture as a whole has declined in the last 50 years. I think the current generation has generally been dumbed down to the point where little beyond our own piece of the world interests us.

Perhaps the strangest is the remake of Broadchurch into a US show ... with a different name, but the same lead actor.

Don't think I've ever encountered that before in a TV show, but it's probably happened at some point..?

How did I get the numbers? On any IMDB title's page, click on the number of the ratings, and you will find statics. US users rating has actually gone up to 4.4!

When I said "IT SEEMS that the people who live in the US automatically think that a movie/TV series made outside their country is bad", I was talking from my own experience. I wouldn't call it 'assuming'. Check out any foreign movie's or TV shows statics on IMDB and see the US users ratings. They're always bad, well most of the time anyways.

Don't know why you got so mad though. I guess you're just very patriotic. Also, notice when I said 'It seems' in my original post? Yep. That too.

To be fair most Americans run a mile when they see a subtitled movie..you appear to be one of the exceptions that prove the rule. Most Americans are missing out on some exceptional movies due to their need to have everything served to them on a plate. (Dats a BIG plate) The fact that Adam Sandler movies are so successful is one of lifes saddest truths

It's up to 5.3 now, but actually if you look at the detail page for the US (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1733785/ratings-usa) you'll see that the actual average is 7.2 and it's just imdb's weighting formula that's dropping it to 5.3.

Same here...and I much prefer to watch them with subtitles instead of dubbing.

I tried to watch The Tunnel, but just couldn't get into it...also I much preferred Saga to the French girl.

I seriously doubt I will watch the US version at all.

And let me join my very high recommendations for the UK version of "Life on Mars" It is one of my favorite shows.
