English Accents

I have noticed Danes have very good English accents when speaking English. It is no wonder many Danes are appearing in American TV.

^I'm impressed by that too. I live in America and the average person here speaks no foreign languages. Ditto also for the U.K. When I watched Borgen, I was amazed at how well the female protagonist (Sidse something) spoke English. Her accent was indistinguishable from a person who had been raised in the U.K.

I'm from the US but have many friends from Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden) and all of them speak fluent English, usually with an English accent. They tell me that schools start teaching English very early on and at least for the younger generation, knowing English is seen as essential. Also, since their own entertainment industry is fairly small, they import a ton of the film/tv shows from the US/UK and these do not get dubbed. Early and frequent exposure is really the key to learning any language. I wish that obtaining fluency in a second language were as strongly stressed in American schools. I tried my best to learn French and Spanish while in school but quickly forgot most of it due to lack of usage.

That's right. I had many years of French at school in England, but have nobody to speak French with here in America. Where I live, my life would have been much easier if I had been able to speak Spanish.

It's too bad one of those Danes couldnt've done the subtitling for the English language version. Blech!

reply

I'm Danish and I feel your pain. The subtitles were *beep* I felt bad for people who understand neither Swedish nor Danish.

Half the time you had one of the protagonists speak a full long sentence and the translation would be "Yes" or "No". Pretty comical really.

reply

Agreed.

It's not only because they learn it from young age. The "melody" is similar. I have heard Danish people speaking Swedish and it sounds like they have a British accent.

I can't be bothered to have a sig any-more.
