I've only started watching from Series 3, but the first thing I noticed was the inherent insensitivity towards other peoples feeling, of Saga. Is it part of the character from the previous seasons and is she suffering from AS.

Some of the board "regulars" can probably answer this in more detail, but yes: it's been shown as part of her character from the very beginning. It has never been explicitly stated on the show that she has Asperger syndrome, but many viewers have assumed it to be the case, and the actress Sofia Helin has referred to it in interviews. http://www.bbc.com/news/disability-34995327
Thanks for that. I couldn't find any mention of it in the threads.
I was somewhat surprised at that because the main character in "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" shows identical traits, and it's a topic often seen on the message boards for that film. My surprise is the lack of mention here, but then again, in EL&IC, it is clearly stated that the kid has AS.
There were several threads about it in earlier years, but they have fallen victim to IMDb's purges to save bandwidth (or whatever reason the site has for frequently deleting older content.)
-------------------- remember: tv is called PROGRAMMING, items of news are STORIES
There is a scene where Saga is arguing with her boyfriend about where their relationship is headed, and he does refer to 'Rainman' - the movie starring Dustin Hoffman, where he plays a man who is Autistic.
The writers don't want to mention it because they feel it would limit their artistic freedom to take the character anywhere they want.
To be fair, a diagnosis was not intended in the beginning. They just thought it would be fun to write a lead female with zero social skills as a good counter point to the male character Martin, who was written as being very social and friendly. However, its clear that the writers and actress have incorporated the diagnosis into the characterisation over time. Especially by series 3.
