Since this movie took place in December 1973 the one thing what I'm surprised nobody has mentioned

The oil crisis was in full swing back in late 1973 to much of 1974.

That was the era of long lines at the gasoline pumps.

The same reason the war in Europe wasn't mentioned in the original. News stories would detract from the nostalgic and timeless memories of Christmas. Also the long gas lines weren't everywhere so maybe they didn't have to deal with them.

reply

Because it wasn't about the "oil crisis".

I felt like it was staged so the government could force the automotive industry to build more fuel efficient vehicles.

reply

Well, I suppose that's possible. They are trying to do that to us now to get us into those awful electric vehicles.

reply

I sure hope that'll never happen, I personally miss the way they made cars in the 90's/early 2000's, they look so much better than today's vehicles.

reply

Maybe they had a Tesla and didn't need gas?

What I noticed is that Ralphie and his friends would have only been in the their 30s or 40s in 1973, not their 50s as the actors are in the sequel.
