Elise and Reeves

I'm a bit confused about Elise's character. I think we can say that Reeves went to the reunion just for her, and that throughout all these years he has not forgotten her. He practically wanted to eat her with his eyes every time they were together, their conversations were pretty flirty and he seemed eager and pushy to know as much about her life in the present as possible. But from her perspective, I am having trouble understanding what was going on.
She was defensive and closed off, most probably because he was so out there and at times so pushy that it scared her a little. when he asked her "don't you want to be someone's third wife one day?" You could tell she felt uncomfortable. Of course the viewer had no idea what was going on at that point, but looking back now.. How did it all click when he sang the song? I could have sworn she understood from their little cigarette outing conversation that he was fully making a move on her. He took her hand and then she let go of it. She cut the conversation and said she was cold and wanted to go back inside.
He seemed to have read her perfectly, when he could sense something was bothering her at the bar and she said "I should go" to which he replied " are you scared now?" What was she so scared about? (Which would explain her defensiveness throughout the whole film.

Finally, did she also go to the reunion for him?

I thought their story was more touching than Tatums and Dawsons. I don't believe she went there for him. I got the sense she was just a kinda shy awkward teen and she is just not a very forward type person. So when she saw him or when he came up to her she just played it cool. Obviously he had feelings for her and never forgot their school friendship. Hence the "Yellow shoes" line in the song.
That for me was the most touching scene in the movie. When he sang "your yellow shoes" and her eyes lit up.

But what was that moment then? What was she so scared about? Seems to me that they had something going on in high school, even if nothing happened.. It would explain why she was so defensive.. She must have recognized him when she saw him. And yes their story was the best one in the film

I liked this this movie especially the Reeves and Elise storyline. The only part of their story I didn't like was at the very end, hooking up in the car.

Reeves was obviously a well known recording artist. Everyone knew him, wanted his authograph and/or have their picture taken with him. He had a crush on Elise in high school but she didn't know to what extent.

They seem to have come close to getting together once but she was unavailable, much as she is now. At the time, she had an out of town boyfriend. This time she's seeing some guy who has already been divorced twice. This shows a lack of confidence or self-importance on her part (not expecting more for herself).

She's always been on the fringes; an outsider. Classmates don't remember her at all and she's in none of the picture except accidentally in the background of one. She's also so out of touch she's about the only one not aware of Reeves' post high school success. She's never heard the song he wrote about/to her so she doesn't 'get' how he's felt about her all these years (and still feels) until he sings the song at Pretzels. Still she's hesitant to even let him kiss her. She's just closed off. That makes him seem creepy but he's not. There's always been something between them, even in high school, but she just seems socially awkward and not good at reading people or the situation.

I realize this post is super old but I just saw the movie and the reason she knew the song was about her was the moment he sang about her shoes...earlier in the film they are looking at HS pictures and she talks about those yellow shoes, her first designer 'anything', and how she forgot about them...you can hear him mutter that he didn't.

The scared comment comes from the conversation they had before it when they talked about a moment they had in a parking lot in high school...she had her boyfriend in Austin or something and she said she got scared. Then in the booth he asks if she's scared again, just like that moment in HS.

Thank you, Ali! I was kind of surprised to read that nobody paid any attention to their storyline. They obviously had chemistry in high school too, because she knew about his ex-girlfriend, and he knew about her ex-boyfriend. And he makes a remark about how in high school, people date who they're "supposed to be with, not who they want to be with". I guess, meaning that he and his "punk rock" ex were together because it made the most sense. But, obviously he and Elise would've been great together. And then the conversation about the "moment" after that basketball game, kind of solidified it. (In my mind, anyway.)
I really liked their storyline. They were both so adorably awkward together; it was sweet.

No problem! I loved the subtleness of their storyline and how it showed all their history bit by bit. It really was all so sweet.

I also think this couple was the best one in the movie. They had chemistry and the song scene just melted my heart. I wish we could see more of them, they were a sweet pair.

Agreed I think the movie would have been much better if it were more focused on them rather than Channing and Rosario. Love Rosario but for me they were the stars of this film.

Also would have liked to seen a bit more screen time on the dancing white guy his girlfriend and black friends.
