Are there connections to the previous games?

I adored the original game, and it's among my favorites.

Without major ending spoilers, are there any connections with the prior games in this entry? Just curious. I don't want any major spoilers, but for example, are there mentions of characters from the prior games for example, or hints of Andrew Ryan/Rapture?

I won't be able to get this game for some time (No money whatsoever pretty much guarantees I have to wait till the price drops or cheaper used copies till I can play games, so I don't get to play games till a few months or even a year or more after they come out). I don't mind if this is a stand-alone game with no connections, I'm just curious.

And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?

Do you really want to know? Because it would be a major spoiler to tell you. I mean I can if you want.

You can rent the game for $2 a day from these weird little red boxes all over the place. It only takes about 12-14 hours to beat. So if you pick it up just after midnight, you can have 33 hours to beat it. If not you can re-rent it.

I'm going to assume from your answer that yes it does connect to the first two games in some significant way. So no, I'd rather not have spoilers.

Good. It is best that you avoid any more research on the game. And certainly don't go on youtube because there are tons of spoilers there. I definitely recommend the game though.

It's not set in the same universe as Rapture. So no, you won't have any young Andrew Ryans showing up.

That said, the events of BioShock are important.

Just play the game when you get a chance. It's rather brilliant.

Yeah it is hard to talk about this without spoiling the plot (and that doesn't necessarily mean the answer to your question is a firm 'Yes'; it's tricky and complicated; you'll understand exactly what I mean once you've played it) but I ca say if you enjoyed the original you will definitely enjoy this one equally and your knowledge of the previous games will make playing Infinite an even more rewarding experience.

The other Bioshocks most definitely tie into this new setting at the end. Can't say much more.

It's odd because the Wikipedia article and several reviews I've read specifically say it's not plot-related to the other games, yet several of you here are saying it is.

Does it have to do with the time-rips? (Like I dunno, Rapture is one of the possible outcomes in one of the timelines) Unfortunately, someone did spoil part of the ending for me unintentionally (in that there are multiple timelines, etc.).

Yeah. That's pretty much it. So no, there's not really a direct link but there is a connection between the two settings.

reply

There is a connection but I wouldn't say it's SIGNIFICANT. It's fan-service really. If you had never heard of Bioshock you might be a little confused by the connection but in the end it doesn't really matter. They could have left the connection out and the overall concept could all be the same. That said, I'm very happy for the connection. It gave me a little nerdgasm. :)

It is fan service but it's also a creative way to make reference to other games in the series and tie them all together.
People were always complaining how this new setting ties in with Rapture and why it's a Bioshock game. The link is a clever explanation for it and sets up the possibility of all sorts of new games in the series if they wanted.

It always begins with a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.
