Is this the perfect marriage of storytelling + gameplay seen in a game?

So cinematic yet so thrilling.. I think this is. It's not an all-out game obviously, story is huge, but it's not like a game like Heavy Rain where it focuses a little too much on the story. It manages to find the perfect balance, even though the game feels a bit padded in the middle.

Perfect is pushing it a bit it does tell it's story well and has decent gameplay not much difference from the previous entries, but that's what makes it fun, no? and the story once you get past the initial shock at the end isn't really all that amazing, makes you think definately. but isn't all that great no more than just a well done Deus Ex Machina, almost quite literally.

so IMO no, not really

I think the way the story is told it's more of an experience than the way you go into a movie knowing a plot and having everything shown to you. In Infinite you are pretty much thrown into Columbia and the story is learned through recordings, paintings, and cinematic. I say it's perfect because I have never played a game with this great of an experience from a story aspect while still retaining the fun factor. Sure it's just another FPS one could say but adding in skylines is exhilarating and vigors add a bit of strategy.

I can see exactly where you're coming from. personally I think the recordings kinda take away from the story yes they add the details that explain everything to you that help you undestand everything but in my opinion takes away from the experience/realism

at the beginning of the game they have a little kiosk explaining what a Voxophone is, almost as though this is some kind of fantastic new technology but i'm supposed to believe that people literally bought half a dozen of these just so that they could throw them away in the end throw them around the city for some random person to stroll on by and listen that just so happens to reveal a small plot point. it's hard to believe that people bought these to record 15 seconds worth of audio then later went out of there way in some cases to hide these things everywhere especially in conviently the right spot you need it to understand the plot more. and some of them literally appear out of thin air.

You can't defend it either by saying it's for dedicated people who want to fully understand the game it's padding to make the game seem longer because if you actually take the time to find them all in one play through it adds a couple of hours because of how much off the beaten path some of them are.

I'm a pretty thorough player and I only found 80% of them in my playthrough and I tried to find all of them without breaking from the narrative too much in some cases time was of the essence or so the game said and I still went around trying to find all of them.

It's not a perfect game by any means. I'd probably give it a 9/10. I agree some stuff takes you our of the experience, and I mention these because I hold the game to a high standard. Like you said, the random recordings don't make much sense. I doubt someone would leave little recordings laying around everywhere, and the same with guns lying around everywhere. I stole money from a man's bag right in front of him and he didn't react. These little things show that it's not perfect, but I think the overall package is great. I still do believe it's the perfect balance of gameplay and a fantastic story experience.

finally someone who who doesn't have a complete boner over the game or says that's it's complete garbage. I'm not alone afterall... In my opinion I'd give it somewhere along the lines of 7 or 8 so 7.5. any higher would be ignoring all the flaws and any lower would be undermining all the right things this game does. again this is my opinion I think the game is good but nowhere near a masterpeice but also FAR from garbage closer to masterpiece than garbage though.

the ending really got me but there is a lot of padding before that they could've delved more into whole Tear concept and incorporate it more into the gameplay.

I liked the story but they could've explored it more I mean I would've liked to have done more than try to get to an airship 3 times only to have each attempt being prevented and the 3rd prevention being the ending.

I'm sure they could've done more considering they worked on it for about 5 years
the gameplay on the other hand I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it, I had fun
except those freakin Voxophones...lol

I was blown away by the story and the ending shook me to my core. I haven't been that moved by a game ending in years. Most games these days have lousy endings but this one WOW.

How on Earth did people connect so much with that ending? Am I the only one that isn't really emotionally into twist endings? Too much of the storytelling is hinged on the twist coming at the very end and it makes the journey feel more forced in how it plays out. I get they tried to meta their mistakes during the development process into a part of the story but meh, maybe if I had heard nothing about this game I might have been pleasantly surprised.

I guess you`re the only one GorrillazButter.

The game truly is a great amalgamation of masterful gameplay and masterful storytelling. I`ve never played a game that was so rich in both gameplay and story since Metal Gear Solid. The shooting mechanics and the Vigors was so much fun, and the story was just simply amazing. The ending was probably one of the best Ive ever seen in a game. It makes you leaving bewildered, shocked and emotional all at the same time. Not many games these days are able to pull of what Ken Levine and 2K set out to do, and achieved.

Well I was being facetious, there's plenty of people that feel the same as I.

i LOVED the story to this game, the setting, the style, the characters, the ending, EVERYTHING

but...

the actuall gameplay itself isnt anything special. it plays great dont get me wrong, but at it's core, its a stripped down version of Bio-Shock 1. the skylines were a nice addition but they under used, and like someone already said above, the tears could have been utilized a bit more in actual gameplay.
plus, it felt really short. Columbia feels very small when compared to Rapture. there was no puzzles what so ever, and there wasnt much to explore. the frantic style of fighting and exposition was clearly a choice made by the developers to get players to the ending.

the story and execution trumps the flaws with the gameplay though. seriously, one of the best gaming experiences ive ever had with a game. and i think thats why people have such a 'boner' for this game. its a game where the gameplay plays second to the story but in a way where it is still satisfying to play.
