The Future of the Bioshock Series (spoilers)

ok, Bioshock Infinite is a phenomenal game, visually stunning, intelligently written and an overall great creation. But with the ending of Infinite revealing that there is always a man, always a lighthouse, always a city, and that there are an infinite number of dimensions with this same set of rules and that the events of Rapture are also a part of this same set of rules and all of these events that went into motion, doesn't this mean that the chance for any original future Bioshock title is dead?
I was talking to a friend of mine about it, the fact that any other game with "a man, a lighthouse and a city" may seem a little contrived and not feel as exciting, knowing what we know about the events in Infinite. It may not quite feel like a new experience like it did playing Bioshock and Infinite for the first time. So what do you think will happen to the future of the Bioshock series? can you see there being more games under this title?
I hope i don't sound too damning either, Ken Levine and the team at Irrational Games have created two phenomenal games and I'm sure they can create more games of the same quality, I was just curious how people thought they could get around what they've done with Infinite and make it feel like a fresh new game but still be true to the Bioshock franchise.
Whatever happens I'm sure they're still going to create games so I'm happy!

i have no idea what they have planned, if anything. but we know the formula now, we know the multi-verse part of the story. so anything made in the same vane will be predictable.

exactly, and the last thing they'd want to be is predictable, which is why i feel this could be the last in the series unless some major changes are made.

Well, recall that Rapture, the setting of the first two games, was destroyed at the end of Bioshock 2. So, the developers have already had to think of a way of continuing the series in a different way, without its iconic setting. I reckon that in Columbia, they did indeed manage to create an even better world.

I think, though, that the series could perhaps do with a proper reboot. There is a template at this stage- glorious world with hidden dark secrets, standard weapons, fire/electricity/telekenisis... even down to the back-story-filled-in-with-scattered-diaries angle. The series could do with new approaches being taken.

Whether there will still always be a man, and always be a lighthouse, we're just going to have to wait and see.

I think at this point it'd be best to move on to a new IP. At least that's what I hope they do. I love Bioshock but I'd be perfectly happy if the series ends at Infinite.

I'd be fine if it ended to so it won't end up like Resident Evil.

Well there is no solid proof Anna/Elizabeth was 100% right. What she showed was just true of her story.

While it was shown there are infinite possibilities, they do not all have to feature the exact same things as Anna/Elizabeth's story.

They could effectively do anything they want.

And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best.

I doubt that they'll continue the Columbia-storyline, since the game makes it quite clear that by the end of the story, the city will never have been built.

However: They could continue the franchise by setting a game in Rapture or Columbia during their heydays. Maybe just use the settings as a backdrop for a more conventional story. I'd even think it'd be a good idea to have a game set there which concentrates more on gameplay/combat and less on story. Maybe even something along the lines of "GTA Rapture".. where you play a lowly worker coming to Rapture during its prime and you have to rise in rank to eventually join the ruling elite or become a leader in some sort of underground movement. I think the setting is much too good to be abandoned completely.

Or end this particular franchise and start something new. Given Infinite's success, I guess 2K wouldn't be too happy about letting the franchise die. But the way I see it, the last thing Ken Levine/Irrational would want to do is to crank out endless versions of the "a city + a man + a lighthouse"-formula every two years... Plus: With both the ocean and the sky having been used as settings, where would they even go next? The moon? In the 1800s perhaps? ;)

I for one would love to see them re-boot System Shock. And not just a quasi-sequel like Bioshock but a "real" System Shock game .. you know.. with computers, hacking, etc.

Well Ken Levine said he is taking a long vacation before he even thinks about doing another game. I think that Irrational might go for another Bioshock game. Ken Levine said that a Bioshock game has to have 2 things. An interesting explorable world and many combat options(vigors/plasmids). I understand the man, lighthouse and city thing. However I think that was relevant to Infinite's plot and not the series in general. I don't know what city we would get the privilage to explore but I'm sure if anybody can think of something it is Irrational.
