I could have sworn the point of Elizabeth drowning Booker at the end of Infinite was to erase all Comstocks from existence (smothering him in his crib so to speak). How does that allow for universes in which Comstock survived and needs to be hunted down by Elizabeth? If not all Comstocks were destroyed by drowning Booker... What in the hell was the point of drowning him? What am I missing here?
The drowning impasse only eliminated the infinite vanilla comstocks- the burial at sea Comstock left Columbia in guilt (after accidentally decapitating anna/liz as a baby) and thus avoided the zero-probability event they created to destroy comstock for good. At first, I kinda wish burial at sea had ended with Liz telling Atlas a false control term, so that jacks rampage through Rapture could be avoided- but i guess Jack the psychopath is the only way through which some sisters can make it to the surface and...go to paris(?)...
"World needs bad men. We keep the other bad men from the door."
No, Booker was drowned BEFORE he became Comstock. That means there couldn't possibly be ANY Comstocks. None to "Slip through the cracks" And none to get baby Anna killed.
None. ZERO. Zipparoonio. Goose egg. They expressly made this the entire point of drowning Booker in no uncertain terms. Comstock never did and never will exist. Ever. At all. Period.
Not only that, but Infinite was about Booker becoming Comstock, and then BaS is saying Comstock became Booker? Levine is like the writers from Lost or BattleStar. Making it up on the go, but making people believe it's more complex and thought out than it is.
Even the original previews for the game suggested an at least somewhat different story than what we got. Where Comstock was a younger looking guy and was implied that they thought he might be a potential ally if they could reach him.
Then Burial at Sea ruined everything by ruining Elizabeth's character, ignoring the entire POINT behind the main game's ending, and implied there was more to the Lutece's master plan while simultaneously making sure there would be absoultely no way either of the main protagonists can possibly survive in order to investigate it.
In other words, the drowning only killed the Comstocks who had successfully stolen Anna, creating an Elizabeth who can open tears and eventually go back to kill him. I kinda get that logic but it still seems a bit backwards to me. Comstock is born by baptism several years before Anna anyway. I would think that Infinite Elizabeth drowning Infinite Booker would prevent the creation of Burial at Sea Comstock, preventing the entire scenario in which Burial at Sea could occur. Ugh multiverse time travel is complicated. Truth be told, the idea of Infinite Booker acting as a proxy for young baptism Booker in the initial drowning always seemed like a bit of a stretch to begin with...
Burial at Sea was extremely confusing to me, so this is just my personal theory on what happened. Basically the events in Burial at Sea take place before Elizabeth drowns Booker, which allows for a Comstock to exist at all. However, he flees to the Rapture universe so by the time the Elizabeths drown Booker, which means the Comstock is spared of the Reset.
Elizabeth states that there are constants and variables, and that there are some choices that can be made and some that can't. The Rapture universe is going to exist no matter what happens in the universe with Columbia, so the city will always exist. Plus, because the Luteces sealed Elizabeth and Booker in the Rapture universe, instead of spawning a huge infinite number of universes (as happened in Columbia with Comstock and Booker) the Elizabeths all sealed into one that couldn't use Tears.
In this way, we establish two universes. There's the Columbia universe, which was ultimately reset by Elizabeth so that it basically becomes the real-world with no Columbia, no Comstock and Booker & Anna get to live happily ever after. The universe is sealed, so now there's no more Luteces, Elizabeths, Tears, or time travel. The second universe is the Rapture universe, which unlike Columbia, Rapture wasn't created by going through separate universes but rather science, so that there's no multiverses created. That way when the Luteces seal off the Rapture universe (allowing the Columbia universe reset to forever remain in effect) there will only be one universe with Rapture, and Elizabeth can't use Tears.
Basically before the Reset, Comstock became Booker and went to Rapture. The Luteces help Booker and Elizabeth create the Reset which erases Columbia (since Columbia only exists because of the universe-jumping), and they seal all of the Elizabeths in the Rapture multiverse into one, which makes only one Rapture universe. In fact, you could almost argue that the Columbia universe created by the Reset (or the "real world") is actually the same universe as the Rapture universe, just many years before. That way, there aren't two separate universes (the Rapture universe and the Columbia/"real world") but rather one single one.
Can't be too careful with all those weirdos running around.
The end of Bioshock Infinite does not collapse the universes and erase the Comstocks.
There are still Booker's becoming Comstock's in the multiverse, our heroes only stop *one single loop* which they are a part of. But the Multiverse is vast and (infinite) so our Elizabeth travels to another universe where she can stop more Comstock loops from happening.
Think about it. Elizabeth can travel through all of the Multiverse - where would she go? She would try preventing her kidnapping in other universes. This is how they resolve her story - because she discovers just like her father she could never let go and become a monster just like him. Burial at Sea is how she decides to resolve her own story when she can see all the possible outcomes, she chooses the one she feels she deserves.
