Zombies come back from the dead and eat people
They didn't really die the virus took over their body and was in control of it this was prove later in the film when the chick questioned it and it happened to her and she turnt and was able to force herself to speak while getting control to say "kill me"
So it was pretty much like the movie "the faculty"

Getting over denial is the first step. This was "Zombies on Mars" done as well as it could be.

The captain guy died, they checked his pulse etc and he was dead. Then he came back. The other guy who got a drill in the gut died and came back.
Near the end, we see one of the zombies eating one of the crew of the rescue ship.
So by your own definition, they were zombies.
