Underrated (possible spoiler alerts)

I was so pleasantly surprised by this film. Had read so much negativity about it beforehand, and a 5.5 rating usually doesn't spell "quality", so I kept postponing watching it until I finally bothered. And I'm glad I did. I think this one deserves at least a 7.0.

Yes, there's some shoddy science in it, and yes, the characters' behavior doesn't make sense for a while in the beginning. Still, I loved the way it depicted Mars as a planet. Really captured the "beautiful and scary" - feel.

I don't think this movie should be seen as a "science fiction" first and foremost - it wasn't the "explorer" in me it tickled, but more like my "humane" side. I'd rather call it a zombie-drama, and a very good one at that. That whole "future and space" - stuff is really besides the point, but still a very cool setting for what this film was.

I loved how it got across feelings of total hopelessness, loss of close-ones and utter fear, and I could really feel with the characters, even the supposed "bad" or "annoying" ones. Dialogs were great - if you take away some of the science-stuff and the odd behavior in the beginning - and the acting was very, very impressive. Never found the film predictable either, it always felt like anything could happen. In total, all of this made for a moving and captivating zombie-drama set under very cool circumstances.

+1. The beautiful depiction of Mars alone deserves more then 5.5. I had low expectations thanks to the poor reviews and was pleasantly surprised when I finally got to see it.
