A town newbie here, so what was the reason he smoked his clothes when out camping? Curious.

It helps disguise your sent from wildlife. Another technique commonly used is just to stop showering for a time, as soaps/detergents and other products we often use to stay "fresh" are not well received by animals.
shareIndeed, smoke is one way of doing this, also strong scented plants (wild sage), wet moss,and yes, even animal dung (cow,horse, etc) will go along way of masking the human scent.
