Jack Mindy - his roles in the movie.. (spoilers)

I'm very puzzled and have many questions about this character. If anyone can answer the following it would be very appreciated!

1. Why was he giving the mother the pills (sleeping/anti depressants) on a regular basis? This was not helping her as a mother to the kids?
did Mindy simply want to have control over her somewhat?

2. Was he attracted to her? Saw some strange glances at times..

3. Why was he in the truck with the logging guys (when that guy shot the rifle during the party scene), whats he even doing there??

4. What's with the confrontation with Willem Dafoe after the rifle/party scene? They were both pretty abrupt to each other.

This role was really surprising for me to watch, being a Sam Neill fan, he played an unfriendly type of character really well and really nailed the 'casual/alooft' trait of a country farmer. top effort!

Thanks,

Rod:)

Jack Mindy was the most interesting character in the film, I wish that he were given more screen time.

He's trying to strike a balance between his loyalties. On the one hand, he's an "old-timer" in the local community, therefore he's sympathetic to the economic interests and needs of the loggers.

On the other hand, he doesn't have the same close-minded hostility towards people outside of the community as his friends, and also recognizes the need to preserve some of the wilderness and landscape.

So he's torn between conflicting interests. He's in the truck with the loggers when they threaten David Martin and the others, partly because he needs to prove his loyalty to the community, but he's probably also there to make sure that the incident doesn't go beyond threats and bluffs.

It was also pretty clear he wanted to get her in the sack and the drug dependence was part of this.

The drugs were not because he wanted to have sex with her. He was protecting her, he knew if she was totally conscience she would help the "greenies" in any way possible and help protest. Thus putting herself in even more danger from the angry loggers like we saw at the party scene. If she continued taking the drugs she would of never got involved in any of that mess and probably would of lived.

I agree. In the end he says to David he's too old to take care of Jamie. Which also makes him too old for Lucie. He simply tried to keep the situation from boiling over and keep Lucie and the kids safe.

All through the movie he was hard to figure out, but the end makes it clear to me.

I will now end this debate with you.

It's a good take, but still does not explain why he brandished his rifle at Martin when Martin confronted him at his place. I wonder who exactly shot Jarrah, and if it might have been that rifle that Mindy was holding. He certainly had a major thing for her - that kiss on the cheek she gave him unmanned him tremendously.
