I suggest this series harsh critics should read the books by Ann Cleeves that they are based on to understand the characters more. American viewers should understand that in the U.K. not all shows are filled with beautiful looking people as American crime shows are. That's why they are often more believable.

I think that is the one thing that attracted me to this show, and Inspector Lynley. The characters seem more real than some of the over-the-top polished characters you see on American shows like CSI.
